WHY IS IT ALWAYS THE VICTIM WHO PAYS IN EVERY WAY?

See, you were all going to get a lovely post raving about how great it was to spend four days at a medieval re-enactment festival (two preparing, two actual festival) and how much I loved it, but no. You're not getting that. You're getting yet more real-life misogyny and rape culture apologies.

Last time I ranted about this, it was Texan rape victims being required to pay for their own rape kits (ETA: Just discovered it wasn't Texas, but it does happen in other US states) and you'd think it wouldn't get any more revolting than that, would you? The government charging someone for being raped?

Well, now women might get charged money just on the chance that they might get raped. Because of a man who believes it's a woman's responsibility to 'be prepared for rape' by paying for extra health insurance to cover the cost of terminating a possible pregnancy resulting from that rape.

Direct quote here: During a discussion about insurance coverage in the House of Representatives, Representative DeGraaf said a woman "needs to plan ahead" for potentially being impregnated during a rape and that she should purchase an expensive healthcare plan that would cover abortion just in case. He said, "We do need to plan ahead, don't we, in life?...I have spare tire on my car...I have a lot of things that I plan ahead for."

Dear Representative DeGraaf, it is not my responsibility (or anyone's) to prepare for the possibility of getting raped by buying extra health insurance so that the cost of aborting an unwanted pregnancy of rape is already prepaid. It's the responsibility of other people to not be criminals by NOT RAPING ME. Also, having a spare tire is a wise precaution for any driver. Conceiving a child of rape, on the other hand is a woman suffering from yet another consequence of a man's crime. It isn't her job to make her rape as convenient as possible for the health care system, OKAY?
