Lachlan stared at Remy with wide eyes and shook his head. “Dinnae apologise, buddy. You know you can come to me for help with anything,” he assured him. “Are you okay? How is he doing?”
“I just know you have your hands full, mon ami,” Remy murmured, running his hand through his hair. “I just really did not know what I should do first.”
“You did the right thing. Have you told Chase and Rogue?” Lachlan asked, standing to get Remy a cup of water from the nearby cooler.
Remy shook his head. “Non, homme…” he sighed. “Rogue was still asleep and Chase had already gone to work. They just told me in his department that he was in some long surgery. I’m so sorry about this. I know you already have so much going on with Tara being ill and worrying about the bebe being early. I just need to go back to New York. Today. This morning. But I don’t want to screw everything up that you have helped put in place… I just can hardly even think straight.”
Lachlan sat back down and handed Remy the water. “Just try and stay calm for me, Remy. It’s okay, buddy. We’re going to work this out, I promise. First thing is to try and get Rogue on the phone and I’ll leave a message for Chase so he will get it as soon as he scrubs out of the surgery.” He paused and looked at Remy intently. “You’ll learn that your family has to come first, Remy. Nay matter what. You do what you do to make sure they are okay and if they’re nay okay, you willnae care what that takes. But dinnae upset yourself here. You arenae alone. We’ll help you. We just need to change our game plan a wee bit.”
“There isn’t anyone in New York who can help me like you and Chase have,” Remy said helplessly. “I don’t trust anyone else and being at Xaviers is no different to me being in Princeton. I have to be at home.”
Lachlan nodded. “Aye…” he agreed. He stared at a poster for a translator service taped to the wall across from them as he quickly tried to think the situation over. “You need to get some gym equipment at your apartment, much like what I have at home. Can you do that?”
“Oui, whatever is needed,” Remy confirmed without hesitation. “But how am I supposed to use all that alone?”
“Nay, we dinnae want you use it alone,” Lachlan clarified with a shake of his head. “You arenae strong enough yet and you need some sort of medical supervision in case have a wee bit of trouble. You need someone with some strength to spot you, too…”
Remy frowned. “Oui, and I’m sure doctors like you and Chase are just hanging out on street corners of New York waiting for a gig like this,” he mumbled and started bouncing his leg restlessly. What he really needed was a damn cigarette.
Lachlan drummed his fingers on his thigh. This was one of those times networking was going to be needed. “How about a paramedic?” he asked, raising his eyebrows in question. “Luke’s cousin is a paramedic and lives on the Upper West Side. I havenae personally met him but Luke has mentioned he’s a wonderful guy. How would you feel about that if he didnae mind giving you a wee hand? It would just be an hour or two each day like we’ve been doing here. He would be able to help you if something went wrong and being a paramedic, he’ll have the strength. Bearing in mind, too, buddy, it’s okay if you stop for a wee while. It just means it will be a bit harder when you pick it back up again. Take a wee bit of time, say a week or so, help Flynn through this and then pick up again. By then, Tara and our wee one should be well on their way to head home and I’ll be able to come to New York to see how you’re getting on.”
Remy’s posture slumped in a way that was unusual for him in any sense. He couldn’t remember feeling this low in a long time; not even after the shooting. Flynn had been violated and all Remy wanted to do was kill the woman who had done that to him. He had even seriously contemplated calling Pyro for his ‘services’ and he had no apologies to make for those thoughts whatsoever. “That’s too much to ask of a stranger, mon ami,” he soon answered, shaking his head.
“He’s not a stranger, Remy. He’s family. That’s a concept you need to work on understanding a little clearer,” Lachlan advised with a small smile. “Come on, buddy. Give me the word and I’ll get in touch with Luke.”
Remy let out a rush of breath. “Oui, okay. If only to stop Maddy and Flynn trying to keep everything from me,” he mumbled and rubbed his eyes.
“We all do stupid things when we’re trying to protect someone we love, buddy. Whether it’s nay telling them things to shield them from the pain or jumping in front of a bullet. Either way, just understand that they arenae purposefully trying to hurt you or lie to you,” Lachlan told him. He put his arm around Remy and gave him a brief hug. “Go speak to Rogue. I’ll get in touch with Luke’s cousin and fill him in on everything. If he cannae help, we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.”
Remy nodded and stood. He put his hand on Lachlan’s shoulder gratefully. “Merci, mon ami. I couldn’t have done any of this without you.”
Lachlan waved his hand and smiled faintly. “You dinnae have to, Remy. ‘Mind that, aye? Dinnae ever forget it.”
