Finn and Rachel come close to ruining their lives until Quinn saves the day. Unfortunately it’s at the cost of her almost losing her own life

When Mrs. Fabray eventually delivers the good news that Quinn made it through the surgery, Sam breathes a sigh of relief and embraces Puck, equally as worried as he was since they did have a baby together. Those who end up staying include Finn and Rachel, who he can tell feel responsible for what happened to Quinn so it doesn’t surprise Sam when they refuse to go home.
Sam feels like he’s been in the hospital for days instead of hours but there’s no way he’s leaving until he’s seen Quinn, not when his head is filled with nasty images of her unconscious inside an upturned car, covered in blood. When Quinn’s mother appears again some time later to tell them she’s awake, what he doesn’t expect is for Quinn to be specifically asking for him. He knows they’re good friends now in spite of everything that’s happened, but he’d expected to see her along with everyone else as a group. He takes one look at Mrs. Fabray and knows something is wrong.
Instead of being taken to Quinn’s room, he’s told to take a seat alongside Quinn’s mother in the doctor’s office. And that’s when the doctor explains the situation. Quinn is suffering from a form of amnesia. Sam learns that since amnesia can be triggered by trauma it’s not uncommon for car crash victims to lose their memory. The amnesia could have been much worse since apparently Quinn knows who she is. The only thing she doesn’t remember is the fact that Sam is no longer her boyfriend.
The doctor breaks down the problem. Quinn has been through something so distressing her mind has reverted back to a time where she felt the most safe, which is when she was in relationship with Sam. She’s in a vulnerable place, particularly with the current loss of feeling in her legs, which the doctor assures them is temporary and nothing physiotherapy can’t fix. If Sam tells her the truth it might do more harm than good. So the doctor recommends that until she gets her memory back, Sam shouldn’t correct her when she treats him as her boyfriend, because doing otherwise could be a danger to her mental health.
“So you want me to pretend to be her boyfriend?” Sam looks at the doctor incredulously. “This is insane.” He gets up and leaves the office and ends up pacing outside. Quinn’s mother catches his arm, forcing him to stop.
“Mrs. Fabray, I don’t think I can do this. I can’t lie to her...”
Quinn’s mother looks at him tearfully. “You’re a good boy, Sam. I always liked you. If you care about my daughter at all, if you ever loved her... You’ll do this. Please.” She gestures towards the door to Quinn’s room.
Of course Sam cares about Quinn, and of course he loved her (sometimes he still thinks he never stopped). So he nods at Quinn's mother and says quietly, “Okay. I'll do it.” She pulls him into a grateful hug, and then he takes a deep breath before entering Quinn’s room.
Quinn is laying on her side in the hospital bed when he enters the room, twisting the blanket in her hands nervously. There is a white bandage around her head, stained red in some places. She's got a cast on her arm, and she's bruised all over the place. But she's alive. And as soon as she hears the door open, she turns over gingerly and then sits up. Despite how beat up and tear stained she's looking, there's still a big smile of relief on her face at the sight of him.
"Sam! Oh my God! I'm so sorry, I don't know why they didn't let you in here the whole time..."
She holds out her good hand to him. "I'm so glad you're here now. Does everyone else know I'm okay?"
Her smile is infectious and he can’t help but return it, even though inside he’s already feeling guilty about agreeing to pretending they’re still dating. It feels wrong lying to her, but if telling the truth might cause her more trauma, what she doesn’t know won’t hurt her.
“Hey, you...” Sam comes over to stand by her bed. “Don’t apologize. It’s not your fault...” He looks down at her offered hand and wraps both of his around it, the same way he would back when they were dating. “Everyone knows. You’ve got some visitors outside but you can always see them tomorrow if you’re too tired...” He doesn’t realize he’s crying until he feels a tear roll down his cheek. It’s not because he’s sad though, he’s just so relieved that she survived the accident. “I was so scared...” He’s not pretending right now, saying what he’d think he’d say if they were still dating. He was genuinely terrified Quinn wasn’t going to make it. “Please don’t ever end up in hospital again unless you’re having a baby.”
"I think I just wanna see you right now, if they don't mind," she said quietly. She held as tight as she could on to his hand. "Hey-- Sam, don't cry. It's okay." She lets go of his hand to swipe at the tear rolling down his cheek, feeling her own eyes well up yet again. "I'm so sorry I scared you." There's a slight smile through the tears. "God, no more babies for a long time."
She holds on to his hand again, looking down. "They said I can't walk."
It's a good thing she only wants to see him right now since he needs time to explain to the others that he has to pretend he's her boyfriend for the immediate future, for her well-being. "Sorry," he apologizes for the tears, blushing in embarrassment. He shouldn't be crying right now. He needs to be strong for her sake.
At the mention of her not being able to walk, he squeezes her hand. "It's only temporary," he reassures her, remembering what the doctor told him. "You've gotta use a wheelchair for the time being but you will walk again. It's just gonna take some time."
"God, don't be sorry," she says, wiping at her own eyes. "I'd be worried if you weren't upset."
"A wheelchair is the last thing I need. I just got everything back. I-- I'm Cheerio captain! I'm dating the quarterback! We actually got to perform a duet at a competition and we won! I could be prom queen! How can I do that in a chair? Oh my God, it's like everything's over again."
For a moment he looks confused when she brings up Prom and singing at sectionals until he remembers her mind is stuck in the past. But as long as she misses school and has to stay home to recover he won't have to explain to her that he's no longer on the football team, that not only did she lose Prom Queen to Kurt but she didn't even go with Sam. He can only hope her memory returns before she's allowed back at school.
She's freaking out the same way she panicked before singing on stage with him, so he leans his face close to hers, speaking in a soothing voice. "You're the bravest person I know, Quinn. If you can have a baby in high school, you can do this. And I'm gonna help you every step of the way. You'll be back in your Cheerio uniform before you know it."
She touches her forehead to his, closing her eyes and just listening to him speak. "Coach won't give me my captain spot back if I can't walk. She won't."
Then she's opening her eyes to look at him, but still staying close to him. "So who do I have to yell at for not letting you be in here the whole time? You were the only person I wanted to see when I woke up. I was on my way to your house and I... I don't really know what happened."
"Don't talk like that. You're gonna walk again." When their foreheads meet it brings back a flood of memories for him. Weirdly enough it doesn't feel strange slipping back into the boyfriend role and being physically affectionate with her again.
"The doctors didn't want to overwhelm you with too many people so they only let your mom in here at first," he makes up an excuse, hoping she buys it. "So you don't remember anything about the accident?"
"But nobody knows when. It could take a really long time. I could be useless for months. For years! Who knows! And God, what about glee?" Throughout the whole tirade, she keeps her forehead pressed to his, and his presence is the only thing that's keeping her from completely freaking out.
She nods at his explanation, accepting it completely. And why wouldn't she? She totally trusts everything he says. "No," she says, with a slight shake of her head. "They told me a truck hit me. Crashed into my side of the car. I can't even remember it happening. The last thing I really remember is getting in the car to see you. You said you were making dinner. Sorry it got cold."
Sam suddenly thinks of "tarantula head", otherwise known as the new kid Joe. If by the time Regionals come around and Quinn's still not well enough to perform, they're going to need someone to replace her so they'll have enough members. Recruiting Joe shouldn't be too hard. "If you're not well enough in time for Regionals then we'll find someone to sing in your place... And if you are well enough, just because you're in a wheelchair doesn't mean you can't take part. Just look at Artie. I'm sure he could help you with the wheelchair stuff... Just stop for a second and breathe," he tells her before she starts to hyperventilate. "Stay positive, Quinn. Please. For me?"
He's almost glad she doesn't remember the accident because the idea of remembering a car colliding into you sounds terrifying. "S'okay... I can make you dinner again once you're out of here. In the meantime you're gonna have to put up with hospital food." Poor baby.
Quinn looks into his eyes and nods, taking some deep breaths and grasping for his hand again with her good one. "Okay. Okay. Sorry. You're right. I just... I'm scared, Sam. I worked so hard to get everything back. What if I can't get it back this time?" It's a terrifying prospect.
Quinn wrinkles her nose at the idea of hospital food, but immediately regrets it. The tiny movement makes her whole entire face hurt. "It's a date," she promises him, tugging on his arm to pull him closer. "Sit with me. Please?"
"Don't ever apologize for being scared." She has every right to be and admittedly he's scared for her, though is trying to hide it as best as he can, but he also has hope that she'll be back on her feet one day. When she asks him what if she can't get everything back, he presses a kiss to her forehead and strokes her cheek afterwards. "You'll still have me..." He's not sure where that came from. He thought he was over Quinn, but being with her now, almost losing her... It's making him question if he ever stopped loving her.
"I'm pretty sure the nurse will kick me out if they see me on the bed..." But he can't say no to her. He maneuvers himself onto the bed and puts his arm around her, allowing her head to rest back against it.
She's lost track of how many times she's cried since waking up, but a new set of tears springs to her eyes at his words and his kiss. Moments like this make her absolutely sure that she loves him. She would have told him already if she wasn't so scared of it. But now she knows. She'll tell him soon. She manages a smile for him through the tears. "If I have you, then the rest of the stuff doesn't matter."
She smiles at him, settling against him and resting her head back on his arm. "Nobody's gonna kick you out. I might not be able to move, but I can still be scary."
"Stop crying or you'll set me off again," he warns her. "And I don't doubt that you can still be scary."
He's missed having his arm around her, like he used to when they'd sit next to each other in glee club as boyfriend and girlfriend. His arm would rest along the back of her chair whilst she'd lean into him, and he'd press a kiss under her ear to distract her whenever Rachel said something annoying that made Quinn want to kill her. Sam's pretty sure he's saved Rachel's life on many occasions thanks to his kisses.
"I've missed you," he admits softly, but then he realizes how that sounds. He shouldn't have missed her because according to her memory they've never been apart. "I mean, you were in surgery for a long time," he adds.
"No, don't do that," she says with a little laugh, wiping at her eyes. "Cause if you start, then I'll never stop."
Those are some of Quinn's very favorite moments, along with sneaking kisses backstage before performances, before football games, in the hallway, and in front of all the Virgin Mary statues in her living room.
At first she looks a little confused by what he's saying, but he covers himself well, and she gingerly turns her head so she can look up at him. "How long was it?" she asks. "I kind of feel like it's been forever since I got to be with you. Even though it was like, a day."
