I seem to be using a lot of my gay hamlet icon recently. XD I can't help it if it's fabulous!*
ANYWAY, ACCORDING TO THE TRADITION I HAVE ESTABLISHED FOR NO REAL REASON, I WATCHED ANOTHER HAMLET AND MUST ANNOUNCE HAVING DONE SO IN CAPSLOCK. AS INDICATED BY THE TITLE OF THE POST SAID HAMLET WAS THE BBC COMPLETE WORKS ONE WITH DEREK JACOBI.
Hades! Have you seen the Asta Nielsen Hamlet? Where did you get a hold of it?!?
Er, right. Jacobi Hamlet = many tremendous sorts of awesome. Also my favorite Horatio of all time, which is important to me since I've been a Horatio obsessive since I first read the play (to say nothing of the fact that this actually includes the `e'en just a man' speech which so many others cut out, :P ).
And, yeah, Patrick Stewart with hair is kind of weird the first time you see it.
Yes! Well... progressing through it, at any rate. It's a silent film, and all the words are in German, so every thirty seconds or so I'm forced too pause it and get out an online translator, and half the letters are illegible squiggles so even then I don't know if I've got it right. :P It's taking a while.
Er... my superior internet searching skills, I guess? I actually can't remember - but I still have it on my computer, if you know of any way to get it from me to you.
DKL:HLNLG:SKDJL! fog beat me to it. That Hamlet . ...[vocabulary fail]. I was so sad to see him die. Of every Hamlet I have seen, most tragic death. But so much respect, and admiration, and awesome, and Horatioisawesome, and . . . and sad, sad death. YOU CAN'T JUST LEAVE LIKE THAT! TOO ADORABLE, TOO BRILLIANT, TOO AWESOME, TOO . . . much :'(
Sorry, your pics reminded me of my reaction to that film. Hamlet = my formative obsession. Fell in love with it, long-standing relationship.
Yeah, I noticed that "for every man hath desire, such as it is" bit too . . . Jacobi is a brilliant actor. Not a HUGE fan of the way the soliloquies are done in this film (need to re-watch, may warm up to them yet), but his interactions are AMAZING.
Campbell Scott's is also pretty tragic (if you've seen it), and David Tennant's is slashy, but this one is tragic AND slashy and J;SAHFLKAS BREAKIN MY HEART ;_;
Ah, yeah. Hamlet is my Shakespeare-on-film obsession, simply because I am devoted to seeing as many versions of it as I can. (So far, five... and the beginnings of two more... and I could easily add one more to that list but the Hawke one SCARES me.)
Honestly, I don't really judge Hamlet by its soliloquies. The kid in season 1 of Slings & Arrows put it much better than I could, but there's a point where you're not hearing the actor any more, you're just hearing the words and all the other actors you've heard speak those lines, and how you think they should be said. This happens often with Hamlet, and one speech in particular, I think because it is so well-known. But that's just my opinion. :P
IDEK BB, BUT NO HAMLET I'VE EVER SEEN HAS COME CLOSE. okay, Campbell Scott's was really good if you ignore the Long Island setting and that FUCKING EAR-FUCK SOUNDTRACK, but still.
I need a Hamlet icon. *runs off to fetch the ones I made months ago*
