The plot didn't take away the powers completely. It let the characters have their passive abilities. One of his abilities is to become insubstantial (Fire) to allow bullets, swords and the like to pass through him. Judging by the instances I've seen in canon (manga or anime), there are a lot of times Ace was attacked from behind or faster than he could have anticipated, but the bullets and the like still passed through. I've been treating this as sort of a natural defense of his devils fruit. I also asked a mod about this on the post about the plot where they detailed the whole, taking away powers thing. They approved sort of a half-way point, which is what I tried to convey in my tags. So I'll just link you here to that. I would also like to note that he did not come out of that unscathed at all. He retained some wounds from the gunshots they just weren't as deep, through-and-through, or fatal. I'm sure I stated that he was bleeding at one point, I can link you to that as well if you like?
I also haven't been able to continue the log, but I was going to have Chopper handle his wounds. Sorry about the confusion! I'm still taking everything into account and trying to be as accurate and fair as I can!
