I thought so. I've been thinking about it, and I have some bad news!
Holly is an average sized US town. The Holly area contains about 10,000 people and 10 restaurants. If we can assume that in the US, there is 1 restaurant for every 1000 people, that means there are about 270,000 restaurants (about 270,000,000 people in the US). If each of those restaurants uses 10 gallons of oil a week, that means that we could collect 2,700,000 gallons of oil per week. The yield for bio diesel is around 80%, but lets just pretend its 100% cause I feel lazy today. The average American uses more than 30 gallons of gas per week. This means that bio diesel will only be able to support at most 90,000 people. While this number seems high, it is actually only .03% of the total US population.
Basically, bio diesel is not a threat because it can't work on a large scale basis due to the fact that we can't grow enough vegetable matter to support the US daily consumption of oil.
However, on a small community scale consisting of 2-8 people all working together, it would work wonderfully. We just have to use it for our own, personal use instead of selling it. It would still save us quite a bit on gas.
