my Free Street program started this week. the Every Choice is Her Own (ECHO) Project is my dream, my baby. i never had an all-girl space growing up, so this was important to me. i’ve wanted to run this workshop here for a while and thanks to the Girls’ Best Friend Foundation and After School Matters, it’s finally shaking.
i am surrounded by a teaching staff that believes they are “virtuoso human beings” and throws paper and pens at youth. listening to Ron bark at them reminds me of the times he used to bark at me, the times i thought i had to leave. my students believe poetry isn’t poetry unless it rhymes or is written by black women.
and somehow, i still feel so at home here.
