We played last Saturday night at New Zion. It was a great night. God
definately moved in a lot of hearts that night. It started at 7:00, and
didn't end until 10:00. We played last and drove away half the
congregation, literally. It was a small church, so only about 75 or 80
people came, but after we played only about 20 were left. I can
understand that though. Our style isn't exactly what you would call
Southern Gospel. I don't even think it's contemporary. We play stuff
from Crowder, Switchfoot, Tomlin, and Tree63, not "Sweet Beulah Land."
Everyone around here (especially those old enough to have had crushes
on the Leave It To Beaver cast) enjoy the boring 100 year-old stuff
your granny break-danced to, but we don't play it. Therefore, they
don't like us. The pastor, youth pastor, and youth enjoyed it though,
and that's what matters. We'll get invited back. The pastor was very
nice about the whole deal and apologized for the behavior of his flock.
We were payed well, but half of it went to our sound guy, who did good
job, but I think whenever we get the money we need to hire a
professional. Joey did a great job with what we had to work with
(laminate floors, sheetrock walls, and a hollow stage), but he's used
to running church sound. I'm not so sure he'd be up to running sound
for a concert setting. It turned our all right though. Oh, and their
ceiling was 1980s spackle and sparkled up, which was funny.
We play next at Philadelphia Baptist on August 7, but I'm not sure what time yet. I'll post again before this Sunday.
We have agreed to play for all the 5th Quarters our church is having.
We'll have one every Curry home game. I don't know any details as of
yet, but you'll definately be at least the fourth or fifth to know, I
promise.
My mom laid down the new laws last night since school is starting soon.
All rules are understandable because Jackson is starting kindergarten
and mom will be working five days a week, so they need their sleep.
(All rules apply to school nights) Rule #1 - All cars belonging to the
Odom household will be parked in the driveway by 10:00pm and will not
be moved thereafter (unless there is good reason, i.e. - we have to
play somewhere). Rule # 2 - Band practices will end at 8:30pm. Kind of
crappy, thought I, but they're all for good reason. Mom will not go to
sleep until her sons' cars are in the driveway. This means that I have
to be in by 10:00 so she can get some rest. No amount of arguing can
make her go to bed, and she should have a gold medal or two for
throwing guilt trips on me. As for the band, Jackson has to be in bed
by 8:30, so loud music will not be the best lullabye. All
understandable. All good reasons. I live in her house, so I'm not going
to argue. I just REALLY wish I had the money to live somewhere else.
Slowly but surely, I'm having more and more difficulty answering to
other people. Authority is not one of my favorite things to have over
my head, to say the least. I could probably swing living with Jon and
Cary if 3 things happened - (1) we can find a place where we can play
as loud as we want as late as we want (2) we can find a place cheap
enough (3) we can survive on raman noodles. The main thing, obviously,
is money. We all have jobs (well, Cary is still searching), but I don't
think we make enough money to survive. I love my parents, and I am very
grateful to live with them and be provided for. But I would love to
live out from under their rules and schedules.
I finally played Halo on a system link last night. Cary, Farris, Josh,
Justin, Jason, and I played 3 on 3. Jackson was playing too, but he was
on his own team. I was proud of him last night. He averaged 2 or 3
kills a game, not bad for a 5 year old. Farris, Josh, and I were on a
team the whole night and cleaned house. Out of all of it, Jason and I
were pretty close for the lead. I averaged anywhere from 20 to 25 kills
in our team slayer games to 50. Jason, one game, had 30 kills. Not bad,
but we still ended up beating them. I think Jason, Josh, Cary, and I
need to get into some tournaments and win some money. I think we're
ready.
I can't think of anything else to write...I'm gonna go read a while.
