Former education secretary gets flap for comments

Sep 30, 2005 13:14

CNN is running a story about how former Secretary of Education William Bennett said something more than slightly politically incorrect. Except it seems little has been revealed about the context in which he said it, which to me makes stories like this utterly worthless. It seems he was talking about a hypothetical way to reduce the crime rate with a caller to his syndicated radio show. While I think he should have been more careful in the example he used, to say the least, I don't think it necessarily makes him a racist; maybe just not the sharpest knife in the drawer. What really should be done is that stupid people who jump on partial quotes and take them out of the context in which they were said in order to make news headlines need to be required to duct tape their mouths closed. Some people really need to find something more productive to do with their time.
