Saturday was supposed to be the main day of the Halloween celebrations in Madison. I woke up at quarter to 7am and worked until around 1pm. I met up with Claire, Kacie, and Lindsey, and took off towards East Towne in search of a Chin's or Chipotle for lunch. Of course, we should have looked more closely at the phonebook, and in the end found nothing. Fortunately, Noodles & Co. made an adequate substitute. Claire's sisters Meghan and Emily, along with two of Emily's college friends, conveniently showed up as well.
Afterwards, we headed across the parking lot towards the East Towne Mall. I thought this might be a good idea, since the majority of our group were non-Madisonites, and they might want to do something while in Madison aside from sleeping and drinking. Also, they were all girls. The latter being the reason for my mistake, we were there for close to an hour and a half. Tired and worn out, we headed back to the Spooner residence around 5:30pm.
I returned to my house, and spent two hours cleaning and entertaining other peoples' guests. Between watching Ghostbusters II and frying some sausages, I put in a good hour on building a new axe out of cardboard and aluminum foil. Before long, the Gillis Girls & Co. showed up for beer and fun times.
Unfortunately, we had very little beer (and that of which we had cost me a fortune). In addition, all of the games and ideas I came up with to entertain the crowd fell through, and I was left with trying to find a real party to take the ladies to. After much effort, we assembled and set out in search of a party that promised DJs, great music, dancing, and lots of free beer.
We were in for a surprise. They were asking $5 a person and, more importantly, carding everyone. We left and, after valiant efforts to find another party and contact an old friend of mine, we headed back to my place with the intention to going to a BYOB shindig. Along the way we ran into a girl that offered to take us to a frat party that (much like our prior hopes) had free beer and music.
XΩ is a charming fraternity gracing the corner of Langdon and N. Henry Street. On the inside, it's a rotting, neglected party house with sticky floors and random piles of clothes throughout. They didn't really have music, but in it's place they offered a big screen TV playing a football game. There was also a keg, but no tap. Those first few minutes in the frat stand as the climax of my tiring effort to create a fun evening of drinking and dancing for the guests, because shortly thereafter, a number of the boys began harassing people for money and trying to start shit. I knew that the girls would not have difficulty staying, but as a boy among horny drunk frat boys I was unwelcome, and decided that anything (especially sleep) would be better than this.
So I left. I headed home, went to my bed, and before falling asleep, tried to call the girls to see that everything turned out okay (a byproduct of my everpersisting efforts as a people pleaser). After 40 minutes of trying to get ahold of them, I gave up, and soon fell asleep. I wanted to walk up State Street again, but I didnt' want to go it alone and risk being called faggot and lesbian the whole time. I also made it through a second Halloween without accomplishing Halloween's primary goal for most students: getting drunk. Such is life.
