Geeks on a Train

It's like snakes on a plane but not really.

I left work at 6:30 in the evening yesterday and the rain was bucketing down at that stage. For some reason, as soon as it gets wet the drivers go crazy. There arte just too many people on the roads of Ireland who cannot handle driving when it's wet or when it's dark. As you can imagine they're screwed when the winter comes in. Although, honestly, if you have problems with dark and wet, them you shouldn't be driving in Ireland at all.

Anyhow. Due to weather the traffic was snarled up and I actually outpaced several buses that were crawling along as I headed towards the bus stop. By the time I got close I realized that the traffic was a very bad thing and decided to continue walking to get the luas.

The luas is almost a metro - city center light rail thing, for those who don't know it. It's not terribly important. Point being, getting the Luas means I need to walk a bit further on either side to get home but it does mean getting home about 30 - 40 minutes earlier on the days when the traffic has gone to shit.

When I hopped on the Luas I produced from my pocket the Jim Butcher book I was reading and got stuck back into it.

I did notice, from the corner of my eye, 3 blokes chatting. The first one nudged the second one to draw his attention to the book. I acknowledged their interest and there then followed a 2 minute discussion about Harry Dresden, the forthcoming book, White Knight and the forthcoming tv show on the sci-fi channel.
Brief conversation petered out as they invariably do and I went back to reading. I was amused to overhear the 3 guys discussing the D+D session they had planned for the evening. They had a problem with their cleric no longer to be able to cast any spells, their ranger wasn't the best and it sounded like the only real fighter in the group had been killed in the previous session and the players new character was yet another substandard spell caster.

Most folk who overheard them probably thought they were weird. Personally I could understand their predicament.

Then again, some folk will think, "What's the world coming to?"
I think, "The geeks have already inherited the earth. We're just letting everyone else live here because it suits us that way for now."
