I lived in Frydek-Mistek, near Ostrava. I left when I was 19 for various personal reasons. America was to be my temporary escape and since my plan was to study Anglistika & Amerikanistika in Prague, I had hoped I would improve my English too (still working on that).
I stayed in NY, but miss the CR very much. I know that after 5 years of living here (most of my adult live) I have very naive impression of what my home land is all about. I tend to get nostalgic, especially when I feel lonely. Kind of like you, when you were talking about being home sick... it's really the people that you miss. I have been trying to figure out where my home really is and have recently come to the conclusion that it's where your heart is. Do you agree?
Czech can be pretty hard for a person coming from an Analytic Language into a Synthetic one with conjugations and declensions (7 cases). But what you have to realize is, that nobody minds if you get a case of a noun wrong. They will understand you, maybe even help you out by correcting you and will very much appreciate the effort. And with learning such a different language, you will gain a whole new way of thinking... a new mindset. You'll see. Just start learning words and keep using them every chance you get. You have the advantage of being immersed in the Czech language and culture, so this way you should be speaking quite well before a year goes by.
How long is you mission? And what did you study? What are Methodists in the Czech Republic all about?
