Title: I've Seen the Future
Word Count: 227
Rating: G
Warnings: none
Spoiler alert: 3x24 Knockout.
Summary: An unexpected decision
Author's Notes: Just a short something in a format that I have never used before. Just because. Not truly a drabble- but short and sweet...or not.
Disclaimer: I don't own Castle. I would lease Nathan Fillion if I could though.
“I don’t think I can do this.”
“What? I- I don’t understand.”
“You once told me that I wasn’t subtle. We both know that you know exactly how I feel about you Kate. I love you, always; but always only works when we’re both in the same place at the same time, and we’re not. I’m not the only one that made promises. You promised me always Kate, and as soon as things got hard we were done. I just- I just wonder if we would even be talking if Montgomery hadn’t; well, if Montgomery hadn’t. I love you. And I’ve watched you be consumed by this search for truth, and I can understand why. But Kate, I’ve seen the future. I’ve seen what life is without you. You, lying there in so much blood…I know how it feels now to lose you and I can’t do it. I won’t be another Jim Beckett. I can’t do to Alexis what your Dad did to you. I won’t force my daughter to rescue me from my own insanity. Better to walk away now knowing you’re alive somewhere out there than watch this happen all over again the minute you’re cleared for duty. I can’t and I won’t. So this is good-bye Kate.”
Kate watched, shocked and speechless, as Castle left the hospital room. He didn’t even look back.
Enjoy!
