Cheap Entertainment

Like most kids from my generation I read comic books, but didn't save any of them until I was nine. I liked a lot of the material that was printed at the time like Jack Kirby's Fourth World series, but my favorites were the reprint books from DC. The best examples were an Aquaman special with five stories drawn by Ramona Fradon, and a Plastic Man special with the same amount by Jack Cole!

In 1971 DC Comics started printing 100 Page Super Spectaculars for 50¢ a copy. The World's Greatest Super-Heroes! (DC-6) was my introduction to the golden age super-heroes of the 40's, and has remained one of my favorite comics to this day.

These issues were made of reprint material from the 60's and earlier, and even if they covered a major character like Batman (DC-8) or The Flash (DC-11), there was always a mix of other characters as well. They featured wraparound covers with no ads, and were usually taken with me on long car trips or visits to my parent's friends who had no kids. There is a very nice site with the history of these as well as some cover scans.

Every time I bought one the clerk would hold it up and say 50 CENTS! I REMEMBER WHEN THESE WERE A DIME! But to me it was cheap entertainment that took me far away whenever I read one.
