During high school I learned that my favorite cartoons (with the exception of Popeye) were made in Japan. There were a lot of American shows I liked as well, but
Prince Planet,
Marine Boy, and
Speed Racer were at the top. What was really frustrating was hearing stories about how many cartoons there were in Japan, but weren't shown here. The same thing went for Japanese comics, people would tell you about them, and once in a while there would be a few pages of examples in a magazine, but no one printed the actual books.
So you could imagine my shock when I went overseas and saw that each country showed American shows along with their own programing. Why couldn't we see more of theirs?
These days there are a lot of Japanese cartoons on TV as well as large sections of their comic books in most bookstores, my daughter has quite a collection of both. But the shows and comics from the 1960's are rarely brought over, and I find that I don't enjoy a large portion of the work that is now available.
The world can be a funny place sometimes, but maybe it's just me.
