The miracle of birth
Blackberry is birthing her babies at this moment. There are the tiniest of little squeaks coming from the maternity ward.
I just peeked in there and counted 9 or 10, which is a good-sized litter of rat pups.
This is going to be interesting.
I will leave mom rat alone now - I think she's moving them (gently) someplace where I can't see.
Update: one ratling didn't make it in the shuffle of giving birth. I'm not sure what to do with the body. :( Say a prayer and consign it to the trash bin, probably. The rest sounded like they were nursing. I sent along some Reiki and closed the cage. I will follow the advice I read and leave the whole family aloneuntil tomorrow mid-morning.
From what I saw, she's doing a good job with them - cleaning them up and piling them underneath her so they can access the food supply.
