It's _That_ Time Again (Please Reply!)

I think everyone's already seen this one before...but here's where I give you the explicit opportunity to opt-in/out of seeing most of my LJ entries, which can admittedly not be for the faint of heart. And there is NOTHING wrong with not really wanting to be exposed to the gory details of my life. God knows sometimes I wish I wasn't ( Read more... )

Ha, beat you! :)

I think I got into Furry back in '95? I was going home over a break and wanted a way to keep in touch with my college friends. Since they were all on FurryMuck, there ya go. Ironically they've all pretty much abandoned Mucking while I've stuck with it, though some of them still identify themselves as furs... for better or worse.

Never did Furcadia. Much like IRC/SL/etc., I waste enough time online already and don't need the help. :)

(laughs) Funny that you thought drawing fursonas was your idea. :)

I don't know about Rhodin. He was kind of reclusive at the time I think. I _saw_ him at an AC I think, but never actually got the chance to meet him, which was unfortunate. His art blew me away enough that he showed me a _draft_ of his sketch for Iago and I thought it was the finished work. :)

I thank you in advance should you choose to draw my character. That would be awesome. :) Iago's a California newt, which if memory serves means he's basically black, but with gold/orange streaking down his backside.

Oh! Here you go- http://www.californiaherps.com/salamanders/images/amsigillatum2.jpg

Yeah, Iago basically is a newt doing his version of the Grim Reaper. He's got a forked tongue if you want to get all fancy, and reptilian eyes even though newts are _not_ reptiles. Iago also has long brown hair, though you usually can't see that because of the cloak (shut up, it was my first furry creation (grin)). Blue eyes, black cloak.

Yeah, not the most challenging color palatte ever. :)

Wow...in '95, I was just in college XD I don't even think I remember most of the stuff in there...other than knowing how to make corsages and boutinierres, those were easy and we made them so often, I doubt I could ever forget! XD I remember my first computer class we had there was 45 minutes of "how to turn the computer on and off" and that's all we did...switch goes on! Switch goes off! And the computers didn't even have Windows on them! XD

I've been on IRC a few times, but that's pretty much it. And I don't go on Furcadia very much these days...half of it is because most of my friends are gone from there now, and the other half is that whenever someone sees that I'm there and they're familiar with me, they're all "OMG HOLLYANN!!! I LUV UR ART!! DRAW ME PLZ!!" and when I tell them I don't do free requests anymore, then it's "U SUCK AND UR ART SUCKS!!" I just think to myself "Well, if my art sucks, then why bug me for a drawing?" LOL!

We didn't actually go to a furry con till 2001...I don't think my parents would've ever approved if I went to stuff like that while I was still at home, but a friend of mine told me about them before I got married and thought that my art was actually good enough to sell. So after Trinsic and I got married and settled in, I just came up with "hey, let's try this Anthrocon that everyone's talking about..." and I've been hooked ever since :) Although it's getting expensive now...last year we roomed with an artist friend of mine and that helped to cut down the costs of the hotel...we might end up having to do that again next year...maybe then I'll finally break even!

I'm still trying to see if I can get a drawing from Eric Schwartz...My brother and I knew about him long before we knew what furry was, back in the days of the Amiga and bulletin boards! XD We used to view Eric's art like that and download his cartoons and stuff. Most people are surprised that I still haven't managed to get a drawing from him (while they've managed to get 5!) but it seems that everytime I try to approach him, even before the con starts, he's got like..20 sketchbooks to work in O.o So I always tell myself "Well, I'll go later" but his pile still grows, so I never seem to get a drawing from him. Heck, it took 7 years for me to get a drawing from Goldenwolf finally! LOL!

And I think the colours are going to be challenging-enough ;) Not too long ago, the wheels in my head finally turned and I think I understand how to "properly" colour black...I still have problems colouring it, but at least it looks good now, compared to how it used to look ;) The newt in the photo looks like it dumped in a vat of sparkles! LOL! I'll see what I can do. I still need to write up my Christmas cards n' stuff (Chanukah card for you!), so maybe I can doodle it up and send it in along with the card ;)

Mmm...yes..must draw something different...

Okee dokie, all finished :)

I tried my best to get it as realistic-looking as possible, using that photo you gave me the link as reference. I also decided to do something different and did it as a non-inked badge...they're a little harder to do cuz instead of inking the drawing, I have to trace out everything with a particular colour of pencil crayon (eg: black for the cloak, blue for the eye, golden-yellow for the spots and cloak ring, etc etc), then erase the regular pencil sketch and then colour it all in markers and then colour and shade it with pencil crayons. Whew!

I tried getting newt part as dark as I could go, but after a while, the black just didn't want to lay down anymore on it...Otherwise, I think it turned out pretty good :)

*keeps fingers crossed!!*
