So I realize that all Ive been doing for the past few months or weeks or however long its been is post mma related links and cool pics and clips from tourneys or watever.
So today since one of my bosses isnt around I guess Ill write something about how the summer has been so far. Its been awhile so lets just see what I can cover.
I'm working at this law firm called Omelveny and meyers. Its a limited liability partnership law firm that employs over 900 attorneys worldwide (beijing, shanghai, la, new york, sf, london, etc...). The main office being in Los Angeles (over 100 of the attorneys work here). Clients include everyone from in-n-out to the LA Metro to heheh u guessed it THE CLAREMONT COLLEGES heheeh.
for those who dont know how I got the job I basically replied to one of the cmc career services emails and got a job for IT the same day. Then the HR girl tania noticed I was an econ-accounting major and asked if I wanted to do accounting instead...sweet deal. I then found an apartment the next day which is two blocks away from work after a careful use of craigslist, email, phone calls, and the LA metro system (I had no car during the search)...awesome. After basically getting rejections since late feb it was nice to have work.I however am not a Summer Associate (law school interns) who get their own blackberrys and basically get to play lawyer for about 12 weeks. I am part of the student supplemental program which basically takes undergrads and gets them to pick up the slack at different departments (IT, Accounting, Office Services, Admin, etc.) So really its not as exciting as it may seem. I am basically doing bookkeeping and makign sure lawyers pay or get paid. Also i am writing up invoices etc all the basic accounting that would support a firm. I dont use any of the stuff I learned in class cause that was all financial analysis, ratio analysis, etc. The only thing maybe ive encoutnered is a ledger and bank statements. In other words its pretty boring at times. Good thing I have launchcast radio and mma sites to distract me while i do my work.
I also just got a second job on the weekends working promotion events for passage events. A seattle based Promotions firm working with starbucks, GM, Ameriquest mortgage, Cargill meats, and other companies. This weekend will be second working for them at angels stadium doing their cadillac promotion. Basically this consists of coaxing ppl to check out the new escalade or cts and handing out "gm discount cards" which are really flyers telling you about the employee discount for everyone promotion. We get them to play a game too which forces them to go inside the car and check it out (evil I know) with the prize being an angels key chain. still for 15 an hour ill do that..hehehe. plus i dont want to lose that sales edge/comfortability with talking to strangers ability ive recieved working at that hell job phonenite and as a sales associate last summer.
Since my work starts at 9am I get to do a 30-45min workout consisting of plyometrics or takus cardio interval when i get up. SInce i get off at 6 ive been training at LA boxing gym learning muay thai, boxing, and jiujitsu. Its an old school gym but ive learned a lot and seen some real cool people (layla ali, julio chavez, lloyd irvin (jiujitsu guy), and some guys from chute boxe (vanderleis team).) This gym however is closing soon so Ive had to move on. I also got caught in a mean ass toe hold after injuring the second metatarsal in my left foot (again!) and so have been wearing an ankle brace.
Monday however I went up all the way to fun north hollywood (little armenia) to check out my new gym. The hayastan academy of Gokor Chavichayn trainer of UFC vet and #3 ranked judoka Karo Parisyan. Also home of Judo Gene Lebell who choked out steven seagal unconcious and in the process made the "aikido master" pee on himself...hahaha. Anyway training there was an eye opening experience. As opposed to bjj these guys love leg locks. man i was getting kneebared all over the place. These guys also rip submissions from everywhere (imagine getting kimura'd from every damn angle). and are much more agressive. Ive seen things ive never seen before.Still I believe jiujitsu has superior guard control and positioning. ITs nice to learn some new stuff. hopefully it will help me submit more opponents in the tournaments to come.
So anyway yeah thats bout it. Took a trip to frisco with my boys dan and steve awhile back and heading back up there next week again. This summer has been enlightening to say the least. workign 50 hours a week,Living on my own, paying the rent, and buying groceries, ironing, and cooking have really shown me that everything costs money and that I am so lucky to have the parents that i have. All while trying to keep up a respectable training regimen and have etime to talk on the phone, go to movies, and see friends is tough...but hey i guess i couldnt stay on my porch with sydney (my lab) drinking beers forever could i?
