Summary: Jeff is, once again, on the receiving end from Harry and his friends.
It wasn't the first time Jeff come home with bruises, wounds or his clothes in a mess. He was quite good at managing to hide it for his mother, and if she did see the bruises, he often said it was him being clumsy, thanks to his ticks.
Today though would not be one of those days. Susan was coming to get him and Jack because they would be visiting grandmother. Jeff tried to smooth his clothes, and dry his tears and get rid of the gravel. He hated Harry, William and Dan. They would never leave him alone. He tried, tried to stay away from them and do nothing to provoke them, but obvious he had no luck there.
Harry had tripped him as they were on the way to the school yard. Jeff hadn't been ready and all he could do was try to catch himself, but having the school bag over his shoulder he missed, fell on his side and scraped his face. He had lay as still he could until Harry and his friends left. It hurt, and his ticks got worse.
When his mother arrived, he felt both relived and ashamed. She of course noticed his scrape - which was worse than Jeff thought.
"Please, Jeff, tell me why you are bleeding. What happened to you?"
Jeff looked down, not wanting to tell her how a few of his classmates treated him. He hadn't felt that he was wet from more than the tears.
"It's nothing."
"You shall not lie. Something definitely happened as your cheek is scraped and bleeding. You know you can tell me everything."
"It's just me being clumsy, I tripped on my shoelace."
Susan didn't comment. She took his schoolbag and at the car she took a tissue and wet it to get his cheek cleaned. Jack sat in his car seat, playing a game with his little car. When she released Jeff, he went into the back seat. He didn't want to think of school the rest of the day, and he was happy they were going to Causton.
