In 1976 “The Man Who Fell To Earth” came out, and my best friend, Sue, and I wanted to go see it because we were both big David Bowie fans. One of her older brothers saw it first and told us we didn’t want to see it, that it was an awful movie.
Fast forward to this week, flipping through the cannels I saw that it was playing and decided to watch it. Hey, I never got to see it then and I couldn't remember the last time I had ever seen it listed on cable and just how bad could it have been?? Not to metion, there was nothing else on that looked interesting. So, um, can I have those two hours of my life back?? It was just awful! A very difficult movie to follow and it dragged something awful.
I’m wondering now if Steven was protecting us from a bad movie, or he didn’t want us (we were 13) seeing all that nudity. Either way, I really wish I had listened.
I got on line to see if I could find out more about the movie, hoping that someone would explain what I saw. Found out the plot line and that it was originally a book. Not sure if I’m going to find the book to read it, because what I read said that the movie was a departure from it. Which would mean that I would be even more confused.
Oh, and I found out two other scary things about this movie: 1) there is a remake in the works, 2) there is a Broadway musical in the works.
Another movie I finally saw a few months ago was “Rollerball," and I would put it into pretty much the same category as the Bowie movie. Too much scenic composition that doesn’t seem to have anything to do with the plot, just wastes the viewers time.
