You can discover what your enemy fears most by observing the means he uses to frighten you.

What? I needed a quote that made me feel better. It's completely appropriate.

Does that logic work on people who...um...aren't exactly your enemies but not really your friends either?

I would think more so, actually. Those people generally hunger for a power they cannot attain and in effect, try and make you feel powerless as well. I've known a few of them in my time, actually.

Well...I mean...it doesn't take much. Throwing me into a wall choking me? Yeah...tha-that's enough to freak me out.

Is it just...a power thing? Or maybe...something else? Cuz it seems that, they got the power and I got none so...I dunno.

Everything is about power. And if you really had none, why would he need to threaten you? Threats come from fear. Those who aren't afraid simply do the things that frightened people threaten to do.

Just remind yourself that if they really had all the power, why would they need to threaten you?

Well...I just kinda thought that I'm a pretty convenient punching bag? Sorta that whole...um, bully thing?

I felt that way once as well. Bullies only pick on those that make them afraid. They see things in the person they attack that they themselves don't have or can't match. They feel inferior and have a need to make that other person feel more inferior than they do.

While that wasn't necessarily true in MY case? It applies to almost all others.

ooc: oops. *grin*

That makes a bit more sense. Maybe...there's...something I have that this guy lacks.

If it's not prying too much...what happened to you?

ooc: *g* No worries.

More than something he lacks, it's likely something he wishes he had.

I was taken prisoner by someone who was excellent at making people, including me, believe he was much more powerful than he was. It's taken me a very long time to realize that he wasn't quite the man I thought he was. He used fear to control me, but his own fear was similar to my own. He was afraid of death. Which, believe me, was completely ironic at the time...

Hmm. I'll have to think about what that could be.

Tha-that's....oh my goodness. I'm glad you're okay now! But, wow, yikes, that's awful!

It WAS awful, yes. But I learned an extraordinary amount about people like that because of it.

*nods sadly* Still, no one should have to go through anything like that.

Indeed. No one should.
