It’s been quite some time since I last visited this journal (let alone logging in to read such tasty tidbits from my added friends and joined communities) to post a collection of words which primarily say nothing to anyone who chooses to read it. However, I do hope for those prying eyes that come across this journal on their way to something of more substance enjoy what it is that they find. I do appreciate and welcome one and all to peruse at your leisure.
It has been barely a week since I gleefully added the DVD release of “Garden State” to my ever-expanding movie collection. And, just prior to this posting, I’ve already watched it four times! Four wonderful times! Starring the captivatingly beautiful Natalie Portman with another exceptional performance, an equally wonderful performance (as well as a fantastic directorial and writing debut) by Zach Braff, and a superb soundtrack, this movie is a contemporary masterpiece in book. Everything about this movie touch the right senses, yet it is difficult to describe what exactly it is about the movie that makes me feel the way it does. Sometimes, the best things in life are indescribable. All you know is that it makes you feel good and any other analysis of why it does is simply wasted effort and energy. I rank this movie akin with other favorites of mine such as “About A Boy,” “Beautiful Girls,” and “Good Will Hunting.”
Thank you Zach for interweaving The Shins’ music as an integral part of the storyline. Their music perfectly sets the mood for the movie, and it’s about time that the general public finally gets a taste of smart music such as theirs. Rarely do they ever tour so a cult-like fan base is primarily what they have, but I had the pleasure of finally seeing them live for the first time at KROQ’s 2004 edition of their “Almost Acoustic Christmas.” Such a treat indeed. I look forward to any forthcoming projects from Zach as his vision to what appeals to me is a perfect 20/20.
Here is one song I felt he should have lobbied to include in the movie. HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
Called to see...
If your back...
Was still aligned...
And your sheets...
Were growing grass all on the corners of your bed.
But you've got too much to wear on your sleeves...
It has too much to do with me...
And secretly I want to bury in the yard...
The grey remains of a friendship scarred.
You told us of your new life there...
You got someone coming around...
Gluing tinsel to your crown...
He's got you talking pretty loud...
You berate...
Remember your ailing heart and your criminal eyes...
You say you're still in love...
If it's true what can be done...
It's hard to leave all those moments behind.
You tested your metal of doe's skin and petals...
While kissing the lipless...
Who bleed all the sweetness away.
