For the past couple of years, I’ve had the truest of pleasure sharing the company of two lovely women every Tuesday evening. They dazzle me with their uncontrollable wit and undeniable intellect. In addition, the fact that each of them are physically appealing to my gazing eyes is just the icing on the cake. And although we may only be together for merely an hour, that snippet of time is a remarkable one well spent. Yes, you read that right...only for one hour every week. “Such an odd relationship,” you may be thinking to yourself. Well, it’s not so odd when you consider this relationship as one fixated on a one hour comedy-drama television show. The show that has consumed my Tuesday nights is “Gilmore Girls.”
This gem of a program features a speed-talking single mother by the name of Lorelai Gilmore (played by Lauren Graham, recently of the hit holiday comedy film, “Bad Santa”), and her wondrous-eyes academic daughter Rory (played by Alexis Bledel). The setting is in the idyllic town of Star’s Hallow, where everyone knows each other’s name and life history. Such a scary thought indeed! Besides the two title characters, Star’s Hallow is home to a myriad of unforgettable characters that only a small town can and should have. There is a town idiot, (so to speak, as his intentions are always good), the gossip (whose intentions are never good), the overbearing self-proclaimed town leader, the proud chef (sadly typecast by a heavy set woman but wonderfully played), the agrarian (who happens to be married to the proud chef), the gruff no-nonsense diner owner, the good-natured boy, the occasional troubadour, and the rich appearance-conscious parents/grandparents of the title characters, are only a sample of who populates this town (with the exception of the parents/grandparents who live outside of the town limits). All these characters, and others not mentioned, are what make this show click. Although the main focus of the show is the dynamics of the mother/daughter relationship (mother gave birth to daughter when she was only sixteen years old), the peripheral supporting cast is necessary for everything to come together in each harmonious episode.
With reality shows spewed across the television landscape day and night, further dumbing down the general watching audience, one can still find refuge in something that is smartly written, showcasing superb acting, while listening to an eclectic music selection, and relating to characters with whom you can certainly recognize similarities with those in your everyday life. All of these fine qualities can be found in each and every episode of Gilmore Girls. The trials and tribulations of these Gilmore ladies should not go unwatched. My love affair with them is unwavering, but I will gladly share their lives with you. Consider yourself warned of their intoxicating qualities. Like the sexy sirens in Homer’s travels, these two women have hooked me in for good!
I leave you with a song by a band which both characters praise from time to time. Another great but unheralded band here in the U.S.:
I’m lucky, I can open the door and I can walk down the street...
Unlucky, I’ve got nowhere to go and so I follow my feet.
A choice is facing you, a healthy dose of pain...
A choice is facing you as you stare through the rain...
A choice is facing you but I choose to refrain for today...
Tomorrow we’ll be back in trouble again.
Dream one, you had a whole lot of fun with a comedian...
Stop short of going all the way, you’ll have to make it someday.
Why is this happening to you, you’re not a child?
Why is this happening? You’ve too much on your mind.
Things creep up on you when you are fast asleep...
You are dreaming, you are sleepy...
You are stuck to the sheets.
In a town so small there’s no escaping you...
In a town so small there’s no escape from view...
In a town so small there’s nothing left to do...
Dream two, you couldn’t see her face, but you saw everything else...
Dream two was pretty special, easily beats loving yourself.
Could you put a name to someone else’s sigh?
Could you put a face to someone else’s eyes?
Is it someone that you’d maybe recognize?
But it all fades into morning when you open your eyes.
