Dungeons & Dragons Co-Creator Dies at 69

I am...floored.

I started playing 1st Ed AD&D soon after high school, and was one of the earliest female GM's. I played until soon after 3rd Ed came out (have always been a 2nd Ed player at heart), mostly because of time issues but also out of frustration at having to buy all my books YET AGAIN and knowing that in 10 or so years, gamers would all have to do it again as they "revolutionized" the system yet again. The move to Georgia pretty much killed any more playing for me--in Cali, the gamers I knew were willing to put up with my 2nd Ed preferences. Not so much out here. And, of course, working, writing, everything got in the way of time anyway. GMing, heck even just playing, takes a lot of time and creativity that I need for my writing, especially since that time now has to be worked in around a job, being available for my now teenage autistic son, and do on.

When I lived in Cali, I was a GM in demand--players liked the way I ran my games. I had a letter about my GM experiences published in Dragon long before WOTC bought out the game and magazine. I never met Gygax, never really heard much positive about him, but he and Arneson created an incredible phenomenon, one that has influenced me even beyond being a gamer, and for that I am most thankful. I learned A LOT about writing from playing and from being a Dungeon Master. I met people I never would have otherwise known. I wouldn't be the person or writer than I am today without those experiences. And there are days when I miss the game.

Alden was born from my GM days. It's different now than what I did for the game, but that's where it was born, in a gaming campaign.

Rest in peace Gygax.
