Will we burn in heaven
Like we do down here?
Will the change come while we're waiting?
Everyone is waiting.
So. Wolfwood is a priest. With a mission, but not from God. He's part of a cult called the Eye of Michael, and his "job" is to keep an eye on Vash. The giant cross on his back is his Punisher, an arsenal that he wields with nearly as much skill as Vash with his Colt .45, although Wolfwood shoots to kill.
"You're a priest?"
"That's not the only thing. Let's leave it at that."
Everybody Knows, Rufus Wainwright
Everybody knows the dice are loaded
Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed
Everybody knows the war is over
Everybody knows the good guys lost
Wolfwood's got a kind of good-natured cynicism and a hardass realism about him, which frequently brings him into conflict with Vash's desperate idealism.
"You and your damn Spikyism!"
The Great Escape, We Are Scientists
They're breaking both my hands
They're breaking both my hands
And telling me to take it like a man
Take it like a man
Well, fuck that
This one is for the young Nicholas who didn't know what he was getting into when he agreed to go around repairing churches in the area. The boy who was drafted into the Eye of Michael, whose body was altered, enhanced past almost all recognition. The orphan who was created anew as the finest Punisher wielder of his generation.
"That function is your entire existence."
Live And Let Die, Guns N' Roses
When you were young and your heart was an open book
Used to say "live and let live"
But in this ever changing world in which we live in
Make you give in and cry
Say "live and let die."
The vicious dogfight for survival Wolfwood sees around him gives him a pretty bleak attitude, even though at the very bottom of it all, he's a really good guy. This causes a lot of angst. Yay.
"If you could see yourself through my eyes, you'd see a man forcing himself to play the devil while his own heart cries out."
Personal Jesus, Depeche Mode
Take second best
Put me to the test
Things on your chest
You need to confess
I will deliver
You know I'm a forgiver
Reach out and touch faith
He and Vash become good friends and function splendidly as a team, although Wolfwood's true identity makes for a sometimes uneasy alliance.
"I've made a friend. He's not as big of an asshole as me."
Dream On, Aerosmith
Sing with me, sing for the years
Sing for the laughter, sing for the tears
Sing with me, if its just for today
Maybe tomorrow the good lord will take you away
Another song for their friendship.
"That is why after all was said and done I wanted to share my tomorrows with him."
Cathedrals, Jump, Little Children
In the cathedrals of New York and Rome
There is the feeling that you should just go home
And spend a lifetime finding out just where that is
Although he traveled all over planet Gunsmoke, when he was needed, he returned home.
"Nicholas, you tried to do it all by yourself again."
Santa Fe, Bon Jovi
Once I was promised absolution
There's only one solution for my sins
You gotta face your ghosts and know
With no illusions
That only one of you is going home again
And home is where it all went down. Two orphans returned to December, one to save it, one to destroy it. A song for the fight between Wolfwood and Livio/Razlo.
"God. Oh, my Lord. Can murderers only be murderers? Are you saying I cannot be forgiven for my past? Am I wrong?"
Hallelujah, Leonard Cohen
I told the truth, I didn't come to fool you
And even though it all went wrong
I'll stand before the lord of song
With nothing on my lips but 'Hallelujah'
In the end, Wolfwood preserved the one thing he treasured more than anything. The place that was worth his life to protect. And he saved Livio too.
"We all decided. Welcome home!"
Further on up the Road Johnny Cash
Got on my dead man's suit
And my smiling skull ring
My lucky graveyard boots
And a song to sing
I got a song to sing
It keeps me out of the cold
And I'll meet you further on up the road
Wolfwood's life was very short, even shorter than it appeared just by looking at him, but in that small time, he always knew where his home was and what he needed to do.
And he did it.
"The preacher. The wanderer left on a journey far away. No one knows when we will see him again."
