What I Did on My Holidays... or Con Report from Wadfest 2007

Sep 11, 2007 10:45

Well, at very short notice (it was remarked upon by Waddy) we went to Wadfest. I booked on the Wednesday and Justin registered on the Thursday and we drove up on the Friday... nothing like doing stuff at the last minute.

Wadfest was great, the rain held off but a bit windy. We attended the Friday night cocktail party, which was also the “Miss Wadfest 2007” competition with lots of chaps in drags… and they looked disturbingly attractive - we didn’t know the competition was going on, so wandered round even more confused than usual. Justin made the mistake of trying the punch (someone told him it was mostly Malibu, but I could smell a ton of gin in there) and ended up with a hangover the next morning. I managed to flatten my car battery when I left the full beam headlights on so we could see to put the tent up in the dark. But the lovely camper next to us had jump leads so we got the car started next morning no probs. Then to get some charge back in the battery we went to Lincoln to get supplies. Lincoln was very pretty along by the river, swans and sculptures and all very civilised. And we found a splendid SF stall in the market and Justin got himself a Back to the Future Delorean.

Back at Wadfest we'd missed some of the day's major events but had a go at the archery, and the lady running it was very kind and said how good my style was. This has reminded me how much I enjoyed archery so I ought to find a club locally and start arching again. We bought Wadfest T-shirts and sweatshirts, and someone was selling off their audio books, so I wiped out my cash in one trip to the sales room. Considered buying one of Dave Hodges BS Johnson's egg cup BBQ's, but the car was already pretty full, so decided not to try and squeeze it in. We stayed up for Waddy and Lupine's talk, and drank lots of beer and cider, and fell into bed very mellow.

Sunday we were busy cooking bacon sandwiches and managed to miss the Luggage Wars (this is a regular thing for me, that was my 3rd Wadfest and I still haven't managed to attend any of the major events... Gill can attest to this, too much time spent chattting and bacon sandwhiching, not enough time spent going to stuff). The auction was fun, with a "directors" chair with Terry's name on it from Colour of Magic going for lots of dosh, and an American proof copy of Making Money going for lots more cash. Pat was tortured yet again by having to hold up above his head one of Hodges' very heavy BBQs while the audience toyed with him by bidding in pennies, good sport... I'd hate to have his arms after a session like that, mangled muscles. Also a new guild was formed, The Guild of Auctioneers, for all the people that do all that sterling work for charity.

And the weekend was over far too soon. A very entertaining time, and only £15 to register and camp, plus and the cost of the petrol to get there. Justin said we aught to drag more people along next year... unfortunately it will be only a month after the Discworld Convention, so I am not sure how practical it will be... but it would be great fun to see you all there!

I’ve started chatting on Bernard’s The Cunning Artificer's forum, and it is great fun “round the kitchen table” , http://www.discworldstamps.co.uk/forum/viewforum.php?f=7&sid=04e22e0884487b52f1b93963783a4407
I’d recommend us all joining up, and getting even more Discworldy, all very friendly and silly.

Big hugs
Karen
