Character background; Maxine who prefers to go by Valera is an only child and grew up in Miami to third generation English parents.

She was teased in school due to her "geekiness" but found her calling when a CSI came to talk at her school though she had always loved science.

She worked for the MDPD for five years before she was suspended for some reason. She was reinstated a year or so later. A year later she was suspended again for adding a rape victims DNA to codis but was again reinstated.

A while later she was accused of being the lab mole even though she wasn't. She then got together with Natalia's ex-husband Nick who assaulted her once in the break room where she pushed him down unconscious and when he was later found dead it was presumed that she had done it though she was later found innocent.

She specialises in DNA analysis.
