Finn is everything that Quinn is supposed to want in a boyfriend, but their expectations weigh them down from the start. She cheats on him with Puck, and in an awful way, the only upsetting thing about that is that Puck doesn’t make her feel the way she wants to, either.
Her first real attempt at being single lasts for two months, before she meets Sam. He’s everything he’s supposed to be - blonde; gentle; popular -but their relationship ends almost as soon as it begins. Quinn treasures him as the Best Friend he becomes, but she can’t very well keep dating him after he admits to an infatuation with Kurt.
The next spell of singlehood lasts longer; much longer. She spends the majority of her junior year, and the summer that follows, as a free woman - which is empowering, but lonely. Eventually, everything she’s always tried so hard to keep bottled up overflows, and she finds herself at Hot Topic, browsing vibrant hairdyes.
She runs into Tina there - unexpectedly, but not surprisingly - and Tina gives Quinn’s bottle of pink a knowing glance. (Quinn blushes a little, and starts to reconsider this rebellion she thinks she deserves.)
“Have you ever done that before?” Tina asks, and Quinn shakes a cautious head, No.
Tina offers a broad smile, and extends a hand that’s possibly mostly symbolic. “Let me help you.”
For the first time in her life, Quinn’s instinctive response feels like the right one, and she smiles gratefully. “Thank you.”
