“Why didn’t you ever join the Troubletones?”

The tone of sincere curiosity that Tina hears from Sugar is surprising - she’d heard that Sugar was exactly how she came off: selfish, spoiled, and insensitive.

Tina looks down at her boots, and replies, “The New Directions are my family.”

The cruel laugh of derision that Tina was preparing herself for never comes, and that’s surprising, too. She wonders if maybe she judged Sugar too harshly, too quickly, with no legitimate basis, and feels guilty.

“But you almost never get solos - I wasn’t even sure that you could sing until Sectionals,” Sugar points out.

Tina feels a little less guilty, and savors the chapstick on her lower lip. “It’s not about solos. It’s about…friendship, and loyalty.”

With a hum, as though Tina’s now the surprising one, Sugar takes a momentary pause to seemingly consider that, before hopping her chair in front of Tina’s, and craning her neck to look Tina in the eye.

“That’s kinda nice. Like, self-sacrificing nice. Are you always like that?”

Tina blinks. She’s never thought of herself as being a self-sacrificing person - and she’s not sure how Sugar’s come to that conclusion, either - and she doesn’t think it would be modest to say yes.

But maybe no isn’t the right answer, and she’s just never noticed before.

“I’m always…me,” she replies carefully, and that feels honest.

Sugar laughs, but not unkindly, and points at Tina as though she’s said something clever. “I like you.”

Tina hopes that’s a compliment.
