Dec 13, 2011 15:44

Title: But I Still Come Back to You
Rating: PG-13.
Fandom/Pairing: Gossip Girl. Chuck/Nate with mentions of Nate/Dan friendship.
Spoilers: Early S02; that Yale episode where Blair threw a purse at the back of Serena's head?
Warnings: Slight language. A first attempt at Chuck!voice. Also slightly Dan-unfriendly because Dan.
Summary: Nathaniel will realize it soon enough. Chuck is certain.
Disclaimer: I own nothing, including Queen's "You're My Best Friend."
a/n: For the slashthedrabbleprompt word "education".

Chuck has always known that it would only be a matter of time before young, naive Nathaniel finally came to the decision that Chuck would always be more hindrance than help. He’s mildly impressed that it’s only when they’re eighteen that Nate figures it out - Chuck expected that they would at least be in college together (not just visiting one to check out the societies, the girls, and the campus) by the time that Nate understood and decided to cut Chuck out of his life.

Mildly impressed, anyway. The feeling of pride that Chuck feels for his boy - and Nate is his boy; he always will be, whether he likes it or not, because Chuck Bass is a territorial son of a bitch, and Nate will always be marked as his - is slightly diminished thanks to Nate’s choice in replacement friends.

Chuck understands desperation, and that feeling of needing someone so that you at least have one person you can trust, even if just a little bit. He’s quite familiar with it - though certainly not through any of his own personal experiences. And he can understand why Nate would be willing to call anyone a friend, if it meant that he didn’t have to wander around St. Jude’s like the sad, lost little puppy that he so resembles.

But really, Humphrey seems to be pushing it, and not in the admirable way. Humphrey is the person that would be the last choice, if having friends was like picking players for an elementary school sports team. (And sometimes, it is very much like that.) Humphrey is the one that thinks he’s better, because he’s worked hard for what he has; because in his holier-than-thou eyes, no one who was born with money or a recognizable name has ever done anything in their life.

Humphrey is the guy that claims to be the nice one; the one that claims to be always looking out for other people, and who only wants to help. Humphrey is the worst type of friend, because he’s not a nice guy at all - not by any stretch of the imagination. He’s just as manipulative, just as self-serving, just as heartless, as anyone else at St. Jude’s.

And, if Nathaniel (young, naive, stupid Nathaniel) were ever to think about it, he would come to the conclusion that that makes Chuck a better friend than Dan Humphrey, any day.
