AN: Prompt word was "khaki," and yes, this was the best I could do. It doesn't even fit omgwtfomg.
Kurt doesn’t dole out compliments like they’re candy. It’s just not in his personality to do so, and even Blaine recognizes that he can’t change that about his boyfriend. (No matter how much he tries, with quiet proddings of Say something nice when they go out on double dates with Finn and Rachel.)
However, a person would think that Kurt would compliment his boyfriend on something, at least once in their relationship. But as time goes on, as days pass and dates are made (and broken, as is more and more frequent, because Sam’s coming to town or Tina and Brittany want to go shopping or Artie’s teaching him how to play Halo), and even after they start sharing classes after Blaine’s transfer - Kurt never does compliment Blaine on…anything.
Blaine doesn’t really mind that much. He knows that his hair is a bit - unruly - and he laughs along when Kurt makes cracks about it. (Even if they do seem a little less than affectionate teasing, at times.) He knows that he doesn’t have fashion sense like Kurt does - brilliant fashion sense, as he’s been told; Blaine doesn’t quite see it himself, but, to each their own - and he just rolls his eyes playfully (and sometimes in annoyance) when Kurt reminds him of that.
But eventually, it does start to get to Blaine, and he begins trying - everything - to get Kurt to say something approving about anything. He tries with his hair, styling it differently, but Kurt just snickers and leads him past Coach Sylvester on the way to Chemistry, for the sake of hearing what the woman has to say about it. (And she has a lot to say about it; they end up late for class that date, and Kurt doesn’t even have the courtesy to look sorry.)
He tries with his song selections in Glee, but - if anything, that just seems to irritate Kurt, and the countertenor bullshits some excuse about having to help his dad in the shop when Blaine suggests that they go get coffee. (Blaine doesn’t get it, until Santana “accidentally” bumps him into the door frame on her way out, when Blaine abruptly remembers that Kurt had been practicing a song to sing himself today, and that Blaine had totally stolen the allotted time for said performance.)
He thinks he actually has it in the bag when he picks out an exceptional outfit to wear one Monday morning, but somehow, that ends up being the worst failure of them all. Blaine wonders if Kurt had a bad experience with a flasher in a trench coat when his boyfriend darts away from him almost first thing, and disappears into the bathroom for almost two periods, but Rachel pulls him aside with a solemn look on her face by fifth period, and explains it to him.
Blaine wonders if Kurt complimented Sam when he wore the same jacket that Blaine apparently chose to wear that day. He wonders if, when Kurt most likely did compliment Sam on it, Kurt just liked the jacket itself on Sam, or if he liked it that much more because it was Kurt’s jacket on Sam.
