Maybe, it’s just admiration. Maybe the only reason that Tina finds her eye drawn again and again to Rachel Berry is because she admires Rachel’s talent, or Rachel’s determination, or even just the way that Rachel manages to share her opinions so openly without any noticeable uncertainty.
And maybe that’s the same reason why Tina asks Rachel - Berry; the girl who stormed out of the Glee Club rehearsal only after making it known that she thought it was positively ridiculous for Tina to get the solo instead of her - for help with the song. Maybe it’s just because Rachel is Rachel Berry, with talent for miles, and no lack of comments or advice to give.
Granted, that doesn’t explain why Tina feels a thousand times more nervous being alone in the auditorium with the brunette than she’d been even in front of the school to perform “Push It.” The fact that Rachel is an admirable sort of person, whose self-assurance Tina’s pretty sure she’s almost envious of, shouldn’t give Tina a reason to lose her breath when the other girl’s brown eyes are trained on Tina, and only Tina.
Unless, of course, it does explain it - because Rachel’s talented, so talented, and Tina’s probably not even good enough to be improved. Because really, Rachel is just that good. Tina would be jealous, so jealous, of her, if it weren’t for the fact that jealousy like that just doesn’t seem to be in Tina’s nature, and she finds herself watching Rachel’s performances with awe-stuck eyes instead.
But Tina’s admired friends before - Artie, and Kurt, and Mercedes - and she doesn’t remember ever feeling the same rush of simultaneous terror and anxiety and ecstasy and accomplishment and absoluteabsoluteabsolute nirvana around them that she feels when Rachel gently touches her arm.
It’s probably just because Tina really, really, really admires Rachel - not just for her talent, or her steadfastness in the face of dicks with slushies, or her general pleasant-to-be-around-ness that she seems to have, but for her everything - that makes her want to watch Rachel as she leaves, and show up early so Tina doesn’t miss a moment of time with her, and stare directly at her (while she mouths instructions from the rest of the group, in case Tina forgets) as Tina sings her first (and probably last; she’s not talented like Rachel, not even close) solo for the Glee Club.
Tina doesn’t take the butterflies (as opposed to overwhelming feelings of nausea) in her stomach into consideration, for fear that that will force her to change her conclusion.
