title: Staring on the Edge of Safe
rating: PG13
fandom/pairing: Glee / Queen of Blood fusion. Faintly implied Sam/Kurt feels, Sam/Tina feels that can be interpreted however.
spoilers/warnings: None for Glee, but the climax of the film. n/a because honestly why did I ever bother warning for language to begin with.
summary: Sam's watch is the third night. They end up going back to Earth without the creature alive, but that's not because of his efforts.
words: 331
disclaimer: I do not own any aspect of Glee, Queen of Blood, or Tegan and Sara's "The Con".
a/n: So I watched Queen of Blood last week and it had cute rockets and an offensive Token Female Character but a not-wholly-cliched and nicely grim&definitive ending, so it wasn't a total waste. Except, Bajiru, why.
The others all die, eventually. It’s a gradual process - first one; another in a couple days; almost a week until the next - but it’s terrifying in its sluggishness.
When there are four of them left (Kurt, and Sam, and Tina, and Santana) they’re almost home, and it turns into a question of Who will be left?
Kurt takes the first watch, after Puck’s gone, and he makes jokes about gay immunity but it’s bull and Sam doesn’t sleep.
The next day, Kurt’s fine, alive and fine and it’s still sleeping, and Sam wishes he’d kept better track of its cycle so he’d know when to argue Santana down.
She takes the second watch, and she survives. They start to smile, start to relax, because there’s just one day left and maybe they’ll all be all right.
The third night, Sam stays awake, manning the controls. They’re not as worried, but Tina stays up with him, watching him from her bunk when she thinks he can’t see, just the same.
He hears it coming before he sees it, but after he hears Tina fumbling to get out of bed without waking Kurt, without worrying anyone.
Sam smiles, stands on command and looks over its shoulder at Tina, mouthing instructions for her to stay back.
She doesn’t, for reasons beyond just resenting that he thinks he can tell her what to do (it was more like advice, really), and in the end, it’s dead and Tina killed it.
There are no profuse apologies, though, no regret at ruining such an important mission.
Her arms are tight around his middle (Kurt and Santana are awake, bleary-eyed but awake and terrified; they watch), and she repeats, Fuck you fuck you fuck you like a relentless chant against his shoulder.
He holds firm, squeezes and clings to her because maybe he was just trying not to notice that he’s terrified too, and just says I know I know I know in the space of her breaths.
