Yes, the lines of maxiPad jokes now have wings. Now that we have that out of the way...

First off, to all of my tech focused friends who are sitting here scratching their heads about the Apple iPad, and it's total lack of any new technology, i'd just like to remind everyone of the initial iPod review by /. chief CmdrTaco: No wireless. Less space Read more... )

Yes, the general populace is stupid, if you define stupid as not caring how things work, as long as they do work. And yes, they like things that are easy and shiny. Easy means that said item doesn't make them feel stupid, and shiny means said object plays to their need to appear successful.

It's like you've read my design books =)

Unless I miss my guess, you, like I, spent your youth pulling things apart figuring out how they worked.

My interest in design is based in the realisation that what I build actually has to have value to someone other than me sitting here going "but it's shiny!"

That said, I'm still having massive fights with myself about whether "it's shiny!" is sufficient justification to build something...

You're not waiting for their gaming console, the iPlay?

('twas a running joke in a marketting and management course I did. that Apple will bring out a gaming console, and call it the iPlay, since they tend to name things similarly)

while I think the lack of multi-tasking is pretty stupid, I think the SIM card is just Apple doing its typical Apple thing and trying to drive adoption of standards ahead of the industry (ie DisplayPort) - just kind of pointlessly so in this case. Its not proprietary, its just that Apple will be at the cutting edge of adoption. T-Mobile in the US announced they would be introducing them in January, for example.
