Summer's Here

On April 30th, the Zimmerman Library where Stu works experienced a terrible fire. It started around 11 p.m. However, this fire was not an accident, it appears to be deliberate. So says the media. We know very little about it except it did extensive damage to the Periodicals area of the basement. With no sprinklers down there the fire spread quickly. But, the firemen were there immediately and contained the fire so fast it had little chance to spread. The building is very old and is in bad need of upgrading. From what Stu tells me there aren't going to be any major upgrades where fire safety is concerned. He also told me that he heard there was another fire set in the Library a few days ago. Sounds to me like someone wants that building gone.

Stu's been home since April 30th. He does go up to the University however. They have accomodated some of the people with cubicals in the CIRT building. Stu also has a laptop and cell phone now. He does go up to the campus to do his yoga and workout at the gym. Plus he does spend some time at CIRT with John. But Dale, the Manager has asked Stu if he can work from home and of course Stu said yes, he rather loves the idea of being here.

John got me a typewriter a few weeks back. I guess Stu had mentioned to him that I was looking for a used one. John saw it on one of the Freecycle websites and asked for it. I finally got it and when I tried it, it didn't work so good until it warmed up. It was an IBM Selectric II. A new model would have been wonderful, but this one was old and very neglected. I ended up going to Brown and Smith Office Machines on Lomas and getting myself a small Smith Corona typewriter. It weighs 1/3 of what the IBM did and works a whole lot better. I can also get it fixed and cleaned, plus extra ribbon and correction tape from Brown and Smith. I'm happy I found them.

As I mentioned in the subject line, summer is here. It came with a vengence and is now once again treating us to tons of sun and no rain. It hasn't rained significantly since Oct. 2005. We did get a little snow in December last year, but nothing worth writing home about. Stu's put the drip hoses out which has saved him a lot of work. Bad thing is the town is now going to estimate peoples water bills on what they use in the summer. I think this is really unfair. We don't use the amounts of water in winter we do in summer. We feel like we are being penialized for using more water in the summer. I'm sure a lot of people are not happy about this either.

Our garden looks lovely right now. It's so green and lush looking out there. I have my gourds in the ground and am looking to find a home for four more. I tried email Jessica and see if she wants them. Hopefully she will get back to me otherwise I'll offer them to someone else and hope they come get them this time.
