Did you know that Christopher Columbus didn't believe the world was round? He was a zealotous nut, and came to the conclusion that since it got cooler as he sailed west from the Guinea Coast, and since the environment where he landed was much more lush and temperate (on the same latitude), it must be the Divine Paradise, and the only explanation was of course that the world was pear-shaped, and that area was cooler because it was "higher," since it was the part of the pear where the stem grows from.
