A Weekend Poll - your thoughts on Star Trek

Dec 13, 2008 13:38

Ages ago I saw a BBC poll about which Star Trek was the real Star Trek. Of course, that is a rather stupid question (which no doubt explains why my favourite version came last by a sizeable margin), but I was thinking about it again recently, and wondering whether I'd get a similar result from readers of this journal.

So please humour me while I ( Read more... )

Actually, my favourite series is DS9, but it's clearly determinedly spinning off Trek rather than trying to be the new-definitive-version, if that makes any sense.

THIS!

I really loved DS9, especially since it is the darkest of all the trek. I am also more a fan of story-lines than episode problem of the week.

I picked up a boxed set of this in China - now I just have to find the time to watch it! Good to know that it's going to be interesting when I get round to it...

I think I need to do another poll asking what favourites are - the ones that are closest to a lot of people's hearts seem to be different from the "definitive" ones...

I like Star Trek. My favourite, and the one I've watched most of is Next Generation. I love Data, and Picard, and... hell, I love all of them.

I've seen bits of DS9 and really liked that too. I was never keen on Voyager, because I never liked Janeway. I know that I began by seeing bits of the original series but I don't remember much about it now.

I know I've also seen at least one of the films (an NG one I think, and I went to see it in the cinema with my Dad when I was about twelve, which would have been around '98 or '99, which might narrow things down a bit).

They were repeating bits of NG on BBC2 recently, which I enjoyed a lot.

Next Generation was my first introduction as well. I love them all... including the ones that really annoy me - their annoyingness has become so predictable it's pleasingly familiar, like an old friend...

Can't comment on Voyager at all, but I agree that DS9 seems good.

My 'first contact' actually came thru an omnibus edition of the TOS novelisations by James Blish, found in my local library. (These are based largely on first-draft scripts, meaning I was in for a few rude shocks when I saw the finished eps.)

So TOS is and always will be my touchstone series. Quite liked some of NextGen and DS9, but got bored real quick with Voyager and had lost interest entirely by Enterprise. Am curious about the new movie, though...

I know exactly what you mean about the book - my first introduction to Dr Who was novelisations - I didn't actually get round to seeing any of the series on TV for years and years, and wasn't that impressed when I did!

And like you, I'm curious about the new film, though my enjoyment may be hampered by the fact that I haven't really watched much of TOS properly (though I saw and loved Wrath of Khan).

Me too, actually (and the same goes for Doctor Who and the Target novelisations, too!)

Have you watched at least some of all of the series?

Well, I did watch only the first episode of Enterprise, so my "Yes" counts only on a technicality. I know you liked it, but for me... *shudders*

And Voyager was a bit of a snooze, IMO. And the fact that there wasn't a single character I could tolerate didn't help.

While I think TOS s obviously the defining series, TNG is still my fave from an entertainment perspective.

I was too young to really understand TOS when it was first televised, and by the time I watched it again when I was in my teens, I was pretty much over the heavyhandedness of the "messages". And it was so dated; even I knew that in the real world Spock would be the one in charge, while Kirk wasted his time chasing scantily-clad space bunnies. I found the inherent racism/culturalism of the boss having be the American Earthman (despite being so obviously inferior in abilities to most of his senior staff) kind of annoying. But I still enjoyed the show, despite its many glaring idiocies.

It's kind of you to worry about hurting my feelings, but please don't worry - I know that a lot of hardcore Trek fans really can't abide Enterprise, and that's fine.

And I loved your take on TOS - very true, but possible to love it in spite of all that. (it's also given me an interesting take on why one or two really annoying things in Enterprise happened, but I won't offend your sense of taste by talking any more about it)

I came in with Next Generation, though I think I'd seen a few original series on the telly as a kid, and definitely the first movie before I thought of Trek fannishly, then went back and watched TOS. I really liked DS9 until the whole Dominion War thing got too complicated for me to follow. I don't know why, but Voyager never took with me - I really wanted to like it, but for some reason, it gave me the creeps. But I loved, loved Enterprise. They were all so young! They made such dumb mistakes! It was fantastic.

I'm glad someone besides me likes Enterprise - they are so endearingly wide-eyed and naive about everything! And there were actual consequences when they ignore the one person who actually knows what they're doing (OK, not enough consequences for pure realism, but pretty good for Star Trek!).
