in memoriam of al dunn

"My latest program--and this changes almost daily--is to enter the operation with a joyous sense of life's goodness and to sustain that sense even after the anesthetic wears off."

i met al dunn on the second day of classes, freshman year. he was the only professor i had on monday, wednesday, and friday. he pointed out that when you're young, you get the 8am classes. but when you're old and they want you to retire, you get the 9am slot.

i took novels and tales, tragedy, yeats, victorian poetry, ten poems (hooray for a fake independent study), and russian literature with him.

al's letter of retirement is below:

Dear Dr. Hefner:

Effective immediately, I am announcing my retirement from SUNY Fredonia. As you may know, this past semester I have been on medical leave and, although it pains me to say so, I am no longer physically able to teach. I am fortunate to have had a career that has been both satisfying and gratifying. Teaching literature has been one of the greatest joys in my life. Although I know that I was hired for my good looks, I feel that I have contributed to the success of my students, many of whom have not been incarcerated. I am grateful for the opportunities that I have had, and no longer bitter about those that were taken away from me. In all seriousness, however, I will miss teaching and all it entails.

Sincerely,

Albert A. Dunn, PhD

rest in peace, doc.
