The notion that homosexuality is evolutionary justified by the extra nurturing of siblings children is one that I find ties very closely to the modern view of homosexuals as effeminate.
Historically homosexuals were strongly over represented amongst the most violent members of society such as viking berserkers. This suggests that rather than being evolutionarily justified by providing extra nurturing there is a possible justification in having evolutionary dead-ends available to exterminate rival gene pools without any risk to the familial genetic inheritence (homosexuals being essentially totally expendible since they will have no children they can be used to exterminate rival gene pools at no risk). So just as it is beneficial for a society to carry the cost of having a relatively small number of soldiers, it is beneficial to a family to carry the cost of a small number of homosexuals.

These are my semi-coherent thoughts based on stuff I have read and should in no way be mistaken for a formal scientific rationale for homosexuality, just some informal thoughts on what such a rationale may look like.
