I finally went for the nerve conductor test though. Which, apart from being excruciatingly painful, confirmed what we had all suspected - damaged nerves caused by excessive alcohol consumption. How embarrassing is that at 21? The 'witty' doctor said it's referred to as "Saturday Night Palsy".
