how to grow a woman from the ground (Topher/Claire)

Aug 02, 2011 18:01

For a fic meme -- specifically, for Topher Brink (as requested by demonqueen666 :D) and meme option b, 'a reason he/she sucks.' I MISS THIS SHOW & ITS SEVERAL LEVELS OF MORAL DISCOMFORT.

how to grow a woman from the ground | Dollhouse, Topher/Claire, 540 words

It's one thing to whip 'em up and send 'em out on their merry way. It's another thing to have them right here, like, all the time. )

fic: dollhouse, fanfiction, fic: claire/topher, dollhouse

Oh you've always had a great Topher voice and this once again captures that. The childish wonder with his own genius and yeah, brilliant. Also great character description of Saunders.

You're right about how old Saunders seemed to be, a testament to Amy Acker's performance. I'm not sure if Acker knew her character was supposed to be an Active from the beginning, but you could attribute it to having an imprint based on a much older man.

Good work!

Thank you! :D I totally agree re: Amy Acker's performance; it's fascinating to watch her go from Fred on Angel to Claire on Dollhouse. She's so, so talented.

This is great - you write in Topher's voice so well, and Saunders seeming old was right on, especially in comparison to the other Actives. I like how Topher's giddiness contrasts with the sadness of knowing the turmoil Saunders will experience when she finds out what she is.

This is just brilliant, pure and simple. Topher's voice, his innocence and ambition and pride in his work, his hubris in the end, as the Greeks would say. And your descriptions of Saunders, especially at the end with her annoyance...this is exactly how I see their dynamic and it's such a pity we didn't get more of it in the show.

I too see the "old" in Saunders, and I think this could be that the original conception of the character was that she was much older, into her fifties if I recall correctly. But this matches the amalgamation of the old Doctor Saunders into Topher's "new" creation really well, and I love that you've written as such.

Nice job, well done!

Aw, thank you so much! :D his hubris in the end, as the Greeks would say Hee, I love how you said that, because I always get such classic mythological vibes from this relationship, specifically of the Pygmalion variety.

This made me miss Dollhouse, which I had actually not thought about since last year, probably. You got Topher down SO WELL and I actually shipped Topher/Claire really hard until she ran off (I think that's what happened? It's been awhile). I love the "Brave Little Toaster" part--it's just so. Topher.
