First of all, I just want to say - it is Spirit Day. And you are all wonderful.

There's something in life I really enjoy, and that is a sale. Who doesn't, right? :D Barbie generally has one really big 'Dream Sale' a year, and then several other smaller ones where you get x amount off and what not. These are some of my favorite things, because it's usually when I try to grab some of the 'special,' high-end dollies. The first four dolls in this post are definite examples of advantages via sale price.
Have I mentioned I have a costume fetish? Yes. I absolutely love costuming. I'm rubbish at sewing or anything of the sort, but OH, I love looking at them - in film, through history, for Halloween - costumes enthrall me. And I think this is a huge part of the reason why I've always had an affinity for dolls.
Case in point:
Why, you ask, is Snoopy on a coaster? Because from the floor, you can't see it, and he's too little without it. xD
How fabulous are they? I am so obsessed with The Pirate's costume. It took me three years to be able to get her (she was insanely expensive at the outset), but now that I finally have her, she is one that I truly appreciate for detail and uniqueness. Her coat is my favorite piece, but as a whole they did a gorgeous job on her. I could seriously overload this place with pictures, but I'll settle for one shot.
The Scarlet Macaw. I adore her originality, and what better companion for The Pirate, right? "Mr. Cotton's parrot - same question." ;) My mom added the blue and purple feathers to her skirt. It was essentially solid red, and the variation reflects more of the
real bird's plumage.
Goddesses.
Remember the aforementioned Ancient Greek and Egyptian geekery? This is more of it. xD
The newest Goddess series has been very strange and yet awesome. The first two dolls were
Medusa (who I covet and will never be able to afford at second-market prices), who was...obviously not a goddess...and then
Aphrodite (I can never decide if I like this doll or not), who, of course, is arguably the most famous of them. They followed her with Athena, clearly a goddess, and they followed her with Cleopatra...a pharaoh. Logic, I will never accuse Barbie Collector of it. (For the record, I think of my Cleopatra as
Isis.)
Athena was always the goddess I chose to identify myself with in mythology discussions (come on - goddess of wisdom, justice, and civilization along with warfare and strength? So, she's smart AND kick ass?! I want to BE HER). The detail on her armor is sadly a bit lost in this picture.
They really couldn't have done a better job with it, imo. Owl motif, ftw.
Cleopatra (Isis!) was a birthday gift (and also on sale, hehe), and there is something about her that baffles me a little. She's really stately but there's...some quality I can never put my finger on (it's something in
her face). I didn't like the way her headdress looked originally, so it's been painted for detail. (It took me hours, and it's difficult to tell I even did it. *facepalm*)
Oh, baby, won't you play me le jazz hot, maybe, and don't ever let it end...
The Jazz Baby line was done a few years back and was the first Barbie line to ever utilize the pivotal body, which is the most articulated body Barbie has ever had. I'm actually surprised they haven't done more with the jointed body since (there have only been a couple of them).
I have a number of very strong passions, in case this was not already obvious. Of them, one closest to my heart is musical theatre. I won't bore you all with the explanation as to why, but musicals have been a huge part of my life for as long as I can remember, and many of my very best memories and the best friends I've had, I've made because of this love. It's something that will always be very special to me and there are times when I miss it terribly. Nothing will ever quite have the impact on me that the magic of musical theatre always did. So, when they made this set, I had to immediately have them, and they sit on my shelves as a reminder of the greasepaint and the lights and the hush and the melodies.
Both of the framed prints behind them, I actually got in New York City. My dad and I were on a trip there, and I saw the black matted piece first (somewhere in Central Park), and loved it, so he bought it for me. Then, outside the Met, I saw the white matted piece, and he bought it for me, too, saying I could 'decide which one I wanted to keep' later, and maybe give the other as a gift. This was years before these dolls were released, and long before my mom and I lived where we are now, but I still remember it. For a while, one or the other of them stayed in my closet and one hung on the wall, and now it seems fortuitous that I ended up keeping them both. :)
Red-headed dancer aka Roberta (or Bobbi) after
Bob Fosse (and maybe a little bit as a nod to Bobby of
Company, too):
Brunette dancer aka
Velma:
The Mistress of Ceremonies aka
Victoria:
Blond dancer aka
Sally (the picture is labeled
"Roxie"...because, admittedly, her name changes - I have never decided if she should be Sally Bowles or Roxie Hart):
The Jazz Diva. Well, sort of. I had the
original Jazz Diva and adored her (and called her Lena, after Lena Horne), but our house flooded in June (long story) and the heat of the dehumidifiers in here caused the glue on her wig (she came with inter-changeable hair) to melt and run down her face. It wasn't pretty. :( Her replacement is
The Eiffel Tower Barbie, re-dressed in the Diva's clothes and now called
Claudette.
This doll wasn't actually part of the Jazz set, but her dress matches so well that she could have been. She is the brunette Hollywood Divine Barbie (re-named
Natalie <- That shot is from Gypsy...she doesn't really look like her, but it goes with the spirit of the theme).
My dolls are many and varied, but I have special love for all of them.
Next up, couples! :) Mainly so that
princealia can be tempted by the Arabian Nights set some more. Mwah.
(ps: If anyone else wants to spam with any kind of collection, I encourage you to do it!)
