As she slammed the book shut, puffs of dust wafted into the air. Hermione was truly stumped. She couldn’t find a reference to an Immense Imp Insurgency anywhere. Panic was starting to settle in even though she still had time. NEWTS were several months away, she reminded herself. And it was sheer luck that she knew about it anyway. A few weeks ago, she’d simply stumbled upon Malfoy and Goyle talking about how there’d be a surprise section on the exam regarding this little known but highly important event.

Speak of the devil. She spied Malfoy sitting with his two cronies at the table across from hers. He seemed very amused. It almost seemed as if he was laughing at her. Nothing about her studying late struck her as all that humorous. Then again, she never really understood Malfoy.

“Granger.” Guess he decided to pay her a visit. She really wasn’t in the mood to deal with him. She was already frustrated enough with the impossible-to-find event.

“Yes?”

“Researching?”

As if he cared. What was this all about? “I am,” she said, quickly returning to her open book. Maybe he’d get the hint and leave.

“Having trouble finding information on the Immense Imp Insurgency of 1635?” Crabbe and Goyle started to burst out laughing. Malfoy grinned and turned to shush them a bit too late. Madam Pince kicked them out in short order, giving her and Malfoy a nasty glare before returning to a nearby shelf.

“What was that all about, Malfoy?” Hermione asked suspiciously.

He could barely contain his smirk. “Oh, that. That was nothing.”

She glared, calling him on his obvious lie.

“Just having a little fun, Granger. It’s immensely amusing watching you scramble about looking for things that don’t exist. Goyle said you’d last all of two weeks before you’d give up.” He sat down in the chair next to her sliding up close. “But I knew you would never give up,” he said with a triumphant grin.

She glared at him. Hexing him wouldn’t be enough. She needed to get revenge. He’d wasted precious hours of her time with his little prank and she intended to think of something equally as irritating to put him through.

Lost in her vengeful thoughts, she startled a bit when he touched her hand to get her attention. Standing up, he looked at her strangely and made like he was going to leave. But at the last second, he leaned down and moved a curl out of the way so he could whisper in her ear, “Relax, Granger. You don’t need to know everything.” He paused for a moment, his warm breath cascading over cheek, and then left with out another word.

As she watched him walk away, she realized all thoughts of revenge had disappeared.
