Oh dear. Whilst messing around on the interwebs, as you do, I stumbled upon a
website which professed to offer stichomantic readings - a cyber version of the old way of predicting the future/seeking guidance on what to do by randomly selecting a passage from a book. Traditionally this was often the Bible, or Virgil, but the website draws on a great range of e-texts, which is why I ended up with this as my reading for the future or something you must embrace
many gentlemen of this kingdom, having of late destroyed their deer, he conceived that the want of venison might be well supply'd by the bodies of young lads and maidens, not exceeding fourteen years of age, nor under twelve...
from the notorious
A Modest Proposal by Swift. This is obviously an object lesson that you should never seek to learn the future, as you will find out that you are to become a cannibal.
More cheerfully, a quick music rec. Antarctica Takes It! play bouncy lo-fi (they recorded their album into a computer microphone) indiepop on guitar, keyboard, cello, accordion, ukelele, and glockenspiel, referencing such things as giant squid, circuitry, and flightless birds, and remind me of Belle and Sebastian/Tilly and the Wall. Their album is called The Penguin League and has a picture of said bird on the front. If that sounds too icky-cute for you, I understand, but if, like me, you have a weakness for such things, you can get the album
here for 5 pounds + p&p till the end of October. You can listen to three tracks, including my favourite, Antarctica, on their
last.fm page.
