Not Exactly Nostalgia
With tired eyes and the satisfactory burn of adrenaline in his veins, Kai climbed into the van, diving straight for the prized window seat. He pulled his iPod out of his bag with a sigh, sliding his seatbelt on and letting his music blast in his ears: loud enough to block out everyone else in the car, but not enough to ruin his eardrums like his mother worried he would. He settled back against the padded interior of the seat, turning to watch the world (his world) slide past, the scenery (the fans) blurred by the glass of the window and the speed of the vehicle. He blinked as the van made a smooth right turn, the width of the bend pushing him towards the car’s door while his seatbelt held him firmly in place. His gaze wandered back out the window as they drove past a series of eating establishments: cafes and high end restaurants, along with gourmet and specialty shops.
She’d love those, he thought.
He pulled out his phone, skilled fingers and muscle memory making it easy for him to tap out a message, a modern day carrier pigeon.

Of course he knew she did. He only asked because he knew the smile it would give her just to hear from him. He could feel it from miles away. He hadn’t seen her in a couple of weeks, the days approaching a month. They’d been apart before and that was normal with the lives they lead, but it always left him jittery. Like a little kid with a sugar rush, he fidgeted about because his skin felt foreign over his bones. It just felt wrong. It scared him sometimes, but whether Jongin liked it or not, she had become part of his definition of home. And he was homesick.

Emoticons. Jongin wasn’t too fond of the art of letters, numbers, and punctuation, combined to mock human facial reactions. He felt that they were unnecessary and took up too much time and space. He would rather spend a few extra seconds formulating feelings into words, and then shortening those words as best as he could to fit the character limit. But emoticons were just like her. She was always scrunching her eyebrows together in worry when Jongin sighed out a response instead of talking, the worry in her eyes bright and evident. And she was consistently wearing that goofy, tight lipped smile when she laughed at Jongin, thinking he would get upset. And sometimes he pretended to, if only to collect the sweet kisses that accompanied whispered, sincere condolences, despite the tiniest pang of guilt.

I miss u, love.

His body was in one place, and the rest of him was with her. He might have been gone, but his mind was still tangled in her arms and wrapped up, warm and tight in her bed sheets. He was feeling something he dare not define as nostalgia, for the breath, hands, and lips that taught him the meaning of love. Sometimes he had to go, but that never meant that he was leaving.

He knew that too. It still felt great to hear it, or rather, to read it from her. With a sigh of longing he used his fingertips to type back a quick promise of return, setting up a countdown of three weeks until they could see each other again. He slipped his phone back into his pocket and ignored the sympathetic glance burning the nape of his neck from whoever sat behind him.
Three weeks until the air he breathed was fresh again.
Just three more weeks.
Breathe.
