Kagome sat at the cage’s side. The white flurry animal inside was as unfriendly as always, thought it no longer growled at her. She was still afraid of it.
The humid walls of the basement, which were lighted by a small candle flame, remained as frightening and unwelcome as the first time. The rats scurried down the holes and cracks and from time to time a dying shrill was heard each time one of them was devoured.
Tonight her mother’s screams were more prominent.
Kagome was afraid, deadly so, and still, her grandfather’s ace, the cage, appeared to be useless.
