Kagome stepped to the front of the line, her heels moving sluggishly.
“Welcome to Coffeerama!” the aproned student chirped in an overly cheerful voice. “What would you like?”
“Large iced coffee with a shot of espresso,” Kagome said wearily, reaching for her wallet as she glanced at her watch. A quarter to midnight, and she hadn’t even begun to start grading the reports she had promised her grad students earlier. Having struggled through her own degrees years before, she knew how important it was to have supportive professors-or at least ones that followed their own deadlines.
Groaning inwardly at the hours of reading and note-writing that lay before her, Kagome’s musing was interrupted by her phone.
“Hi,” she sighed to her husband, cringing at the late hour.
“You missed dinner,” he stated calmly.
“I’m sorry, Sesshoumaru. It’s been a busy day, and I’m going to be up all night working.”
“Just working?” he asked silkily, his voice lowering in a way that sent shivers down her spine.
“Y-yes?”
“Come home soon,” he purred. “I saved you dessert.”
Flipping her phone shut, Kagome turned her rosy cheeks to the girl holding her coffee.
“Make that a double shot,” she said.
