Digging the Hole Deeper

After they had finished dinner, Ayame offered to drive Kagome over to Sesshomaru’s office, since she was worried about him. Kagome had Gojyo pack up some food for her to take to Sesshomaru just in case he hadn’t eaten.

“Come in,” was Sesshomaru’s surprised response to the knock on his door. “Kagome? What are you doing here so late?” Sesshomaru asked as Ayame wheeled Kagome into his office.

“I thought you might be hungry, so I brought you something to eat.”

“There was no need to,” Sesshomaru replied, turning his attention back to his computer.

“Did you eat already?”

“No,” Sesshomaru replied distractedly.

“Well, I was concerned and wanted to be sure you ate something. You’ve been…”

“If I need something to eat I would have had something delivered,” Sesshomaru responded without thinking and immediately regretted what he said.

“I’m sorry for being concerned for your well being!” Kagome snapped. “I’ll make sure not to make this mistake again!”

“I didn’t mean it that way.”

“I’ll see you at home,” Kagome said, turning her wheel chair.

“I’m almost done here, Ayame, so you can leave Kagome, and I’ll take her home.”

“Do I have a say in this?”

“Of course. I just thought you might want to stay and tell me your good news.”

“It’s not that big of a deal, and I’m tired. I would like to go home.” Kagome’s tone was cold.

“Kagome, please stay.”

“I’ll see you at home.” Kagome wheeled out of the office.

Sesshomaru walked into the bedroom with a bunch of handpicked Peonies in his hand. “Will you accept my peace offering?”

“You think flowers will fix everything,” Kagome answered with mock anger.

“I was hoping it would help. I’ll put them here.” Sesshomaru placed them in a vase on top of the desk. “Tell me you’re good news.”

“I’ll show you. Watch my feet.”

Sesshomaru watched as Kagome concentrated hard. Obviously, she was trying to move her toes, and the effort she was putting into it tugged at his heart. A short while later, he saw her big toe move a bit.

“Did you see that?” Kagome asked, slightly out of breath.

“Yes.”

That wasn’t the response Kagome was expecting, and she was a little hurt. “Like I said earlier, it’s not that big of a deal.”

“I’m excited for you. It’s just that you put so much effort into it.”

“I understand.”
