Kagome felt miserable, standing at the front of the church in a purple dress, a bouquet of peonies in her hands. Today was supposed to be a wonderful day, but Kagome felt like a wreck. Here she was, watching her best friend marry a woman who not only was very cold and distant, but had taken so many things from Kagome's dreams. The cathedral they stood in was where Kagome wished to marry. The ornate arrangements of peonies were what Kagome planned to display on her wedding day. And to make things worse - the bride was marrying the very man Kagome always thought she would marry. All in all, Kagome's mood was far too morbid for a joyous occasion such as this.

"You may kiss the bride," the priest stated, and Inuyasha and Kikyo sealed their vows with a loving kiss. Kagome was happy for them, really, she was, but she felt sorry for herself. All these years she had been too scared to admit her feelings to Inuyasha, and now he had slipped through her fingers.

The two newlyweds walked down the aisle together, while Kagome pondered on her future. What man would be able to sweep her off her feet?

At the reception, while everyone danced in each others' arms and laughed, Kagome kept to herself. Feeling thirsty, Kagome stood up to get herself another drink, only to slip and tumble face-first to the ground. Embarrassed, Kagome sat up, only to look into a pair of rich golden eyes. A blush formed on her cheeks, she had really hoped no one would see that...

"Not every day that I see a woman trip over her own stilettos," the man commented with a playful smirk. He was rather attractive, with beautiful silver hair.

"Yes, well," Kagome muttered, "this one feels like leftovers."

"Ah, you do not approve of my brother's choice in a bride?"

"Brother?" Kagome gasped. She knew about Sesshomaru, but never had met him before.

"Unfortunately," Sesshomaru said as he held out his hand, "how about we dance?"

Kagome did not know what possessed her that evening, but somehow, she fell in love with Sesshomaru at first sight. And one year later she became his wife, with a wedding ceremony ten times better than the one that brought them together. The atrium was filled with vibrant peonies, the silent rivalry between Kagome and Kikyo long forgotten.
