Summary: Continuation of Ambush; Sesshomaru realizes why Inuyasha is so protective of Kagome, and agrees.

Curled beside him, Kagome fell asleep quickly. Sesshomaru covered her with his haori, but despite the added warmth, she still shivered pitifully in the darkness.

Sighing, Sesshomaru moved closer. Sharing body heat was inherently necessary, given the faulty function of her clothing. Pulling her close, Sesshomaru allowed her to nestle into his warmth.

Pressed as she was against him, Sesshomaru took his time committing her scent to memory; like sun-warmed honey, she smelt sweet, just as she tasted. He had expected to find the taste of her blood to be bitter, soured by humanity, and by tainted purity.

But Kagome was unlike most humans. She wasn’t greedy, nor was she dishonest. Even injured she maintained a civilized decorum - shedding tears silently so as not to burden him with her humanity, or her weakness.

Sesshomaru had always suspected some sort of intimacy between her and his half-brother, but Kagome tasted of innocence, untouched by the foul nature of human men.

Her scent was fresh and clean, despite the conditions, and it appealed to something primal within him.

Sesshomaru found himself understanding Inuyasha’s fierce need to protect the woman.

Kagome was pure, loyal, and just as protective of anyone she deemed family.
